I am supporting this 101%...thanx Red! people should have done this long time ago, plant edibles, consumables, one that will nourish your family and not your backyard.

I do not agree of having a Vegetable Garden in the front of your House. Why do not you have a Vegetable garden at the rear of the house? In India we never have a Vegetable garden in the front of a house and we always have it at the rear of the house.

The front Vegetable Garden will totally spoil the asthetic sense of a house.

I'm sorry but I don't appreciate the patronising tone being used here. Everybody is entitled to their opinion and it takes a very mature and tolerant individual to accept a parallel thought process that's different from theirs. Most importantly, doing courses does not develop aesthetic sense! Coming from a predominantly farming family running a full fledge organic farm in India, we don't need courses in horticulture, gardening, soils etc etc etc to understand the underpinnings and importance...

YES patchy front ended vegetable gardens will ruin the look of a house. A back kitchen garden or even container gardens are much better and viable options.

Any garden I've ever seen is just as beautiful as any well kept yard, even more so. We know the environmental impact of a garden is going to be different from a lawn, shrubs, etc., so that's a consideration too (most likely favorable). I suppose the fundamental problem for so many cities/municipalities stems from the challenge to the status quo, especially when it calls into question the larger worldview of many. Plow the lawns!

I grow edible flowers among my veg. Nasturtiums have nice peppery leaves for salads and you can eat the flowers too which are red, yellow and orange. They can be clumps or trailing, you choose.Your officials would not like English gardens, we like to keep them full of plants, a real riot of colour.Over here we only object if people neglect their gardens, though there is no law against it.

The world would be a healthier place if everyone grew a vegetable garden.

we need to be able to feed our families and the ability to grow some of our own is a right not a privilege.

By growing our own foods we have control over what we put in it & know what we are putting in our bodies & hopefully by more people growing their own gardens we will be hurting Monsanto! :)

Zoning was put in place to create an aesthetic supporting a feeling of local community, especially in the 1950s. This may be as obsolete as the All Electric Home concept, which also was a `1950s era promotion. Local zoning for aesthetics and building standards are in the way of green building and solar or other renewables development.
