I am supporting this 101%...thanx Red! people should have done this long time ago, plant edibles, consumables, one that will nourish your family and not your backyard.

I do not agree of having a Vegetable Garden in the front of your House. Why do not you have a Vegetable garden at the rear of the house? In India we never have a Vegetable garden in the front of a house and we always have it at the rear of the house.

The front Vegetable Garden will totally spoil the asthetic sense of a house.

I'm sorry but I don't appreciate the patronising tone being used here. Everybody is entitled to their opinion and it takes a very mature and tolerant individual to accept a parallel thought process that's different from theirs. Most importantly, doing courses does not develop aesthetic sense! Coming from a predominantly farming family running a full fledge organic farm in India, we don't need courses in horticulture, gardening, soils etc etc etc to understand the underpinnings and importance...

YES patchy front ended vegetable gardens will ruin the look of a house. A back kitchen garden or even container gardens are much better and viable options.

Orlando officials, if you can talk the talk, ya' better walk the walk and allow residents grow their own food and help them save money rather than wasting tax dollars on frivelous, backwards-minded ordinances such as this, dispense with your anti-vegetartian/anti-vegan attitude, embrace the 21st Century, and allow folks to grow their veggie gardens...Or else, you'll find yourselves living in cardboard shacks underneath highway bridges, in rags, be looking for your next meal from a garbage can!

Oops, that should be (anti)-VEGETARIAN...
Actually, it owuld be great if folks here could reject
animal meat in favor of vegetarian/vegan products,
for the betterment of health AND our Earth's animal kingdom. :)

Didn't a couple in Canada (Montreal?) just go through this about 6 months ago? There was a huge petition response and in the end, the municipal gov. ended up changing the ordinance and hiring the couple to help establish a new policy ALLOWING front yard gardens? Why do we have to keep visitng the same stupid stuff over and over? What is it with people? I think a pretty, well tended vegetable garden is quite lovely, and an addition to any neighborhood! Not to mention exactly what...

Not to mention exactly what Michelle Obama is trying to promote - more fresh vegetables in our crappy national diet!

I have to give our First Lady lots of credit for her cause in
promoting a healthy diet of fruits and veggies.
I've been a vegetarian since 1984 and we can get our
protein, vitamins, minerals, and fiber from plant-based sources
such as beans, spinach, kale, broccoli, blueberries and other fruits, nuts, etc.,
and reject animal meat altogether. :)

McMinnville is full of front and side yard gardens. They don't stand out any more than flowers and are very pretty. When you walk around so that you can see all the things growing they're quite inspiring. I do think if people have front yard gardens they should look nice. But I have neighbors with roses and such in their front yard who park on their grass like it's a ghetto and snarly weeds are all over - I'd rather have a pretty garden!

I would rather see a vegetable garden in the front yard then junk cars and or beer bottles. I am sorry Christine, who are you to say what should be grown where? Image to uphold please, in this day and age. With all the Vacant lots and foreclosed properties? I guess I must be living in the wrong part of the world.

Deborah Mills? So some places making it against the law to grow a garden on a front yard?

I find it absurd that it should be against the law.

Note, I am not defending him, but, some places have an image to uphold. If they grew the garden in the back yard, it wouldn't be an issue. That is, if you have a decent size back yard.

Here in the United States, some residencies have restrictions and deed limited areas. With that said, if someone has a deed in that area, and it states that the front lawn must be up kept and looking nicely. I like growing my own fruits and veggies as much as the next person, I just use areas that some people wouldn't consider an eye sore. His isn't to us, but to others, it is.

I don't understand a problem in planting an edible landscape. What is the prob?

Shauna Dumey

in a lot of neighborhoods its against the neighborhood ordinances. most say something to the effect that landscaping must be ornamental and conform to the landscapes around them. its ridiculous really.
