I have to tell you, that most of the suggestions (up above) on how to approach a homeless person, are pretty corny. I was homeless for about 4 years. Unless one is brand new to the street life, they already know where the shelters are, and how to get food stamps or meals. Not all, but most people on the street have either alcohol or drug issues...or both...and all they really want from you is money so they can go get a beer...or whatever. In this town, there were people who went around...

In this town, there were people who went around and handed out bags with helpful things inside like socks, warm gloves, toiletries, and so forth. Now those things were helpful...far more than someone who has never been homeless, trying to tell me about the Mission. LOL...oh my god....you have NO idea how many times homeless people hear, "go to the Mission." I doubt they had ever seen the inside of a mission.

I heard about a lady who had an outside bathroom and she let homeless people have showers there if they asked. I thought that was a good idea.

Yes! Very generous of her and an excellent idea. Staying clean is so hard when you live on the streets.

I fought in the Occupy movement last year and eleven activists and journalist were charged with felonies for trespassing at Wells Fargo unused mortgage bank as a form of protest and the courts go on prosecuting activists with cases that clog the courts, cost large amounts of money and deaden the community to its very problem of homelessness.

I have a client who had to leave with two young girls, because his wife stabbed him in the leg, and choked their daughter. They lived in a flea-bag motel at Christmas-time for more than two weeks. She still owes them child support, but she spends it on beer. Why must domestic violence always have a feminine image? Seriously...

Yes, domestic violence has quite the impact on leading people down the road to becoming homeless. Be sure to share your story and experiences with others on our Story page. Thank you for your support!
