Vets discovered the tear in his esophagus caused by a bullet could not be fixed....Retired K9 Drake has been put to sleep after vets determined his injuries were too severe. So far no funeral services have been announced. Deputy's say charges will not be upgraded. They say it is still felony cruelty to an animal.....FELONY...SOUNDS LIKE A LITTLE MORE THAN A COUPLE DAYS OFF WITHOUT PAY....Murder is murder!

"a police dog is considered a full-fledged police officer"."In many jurisdictions the intentional injuring or killing of a police dog is a felony,[1] subjecting the perpetrator to harsher penalties than those in the statutes embodied in local animal cruelty laws,[2] just as an assault on a human police officer is often a more serious offense than the same assault on a non-officer" ( Wikipedia).

Three days unpaid suspension for this terrible, prevantable tragedy is not justice. Leave the police officer in a locked car in hot weather for several days without food or water. That would be justice.

That is purely cruelity to animals and therefore the law should take its course.

If I seen anyone mistreating an animal I would call the police like yesterday not to mention turn him in to the Humane Society and every other organization I could find that fights animal cruelty. I love animals. They deserve attention and love just as much as any human being. They have feeling although they can't speak you can see it in their eyes if they are hurt, sad, happy, excited, angry, etc.. They have feelings just like we do and I think any criminal act against an animal should be...

This is absolutely unbelievable. If we mistreated our dog like that WE would go to jail. That cop should never be allowed to have a dog for a partner or pet!

WTH are you talking about? Are you on the wrong thread? What does this have to do with Harley?

Carol Hagerman Camenisch

WELL we knew he died of at heat in the car duhhhh, so who pays for that.He relied on his stupid partner to protect him. the dog was helpless. how about putting mathis in a locked hot car and the idiot who said no crime was commited, for along time make them suffer, the way poor harley did. by the way what was he doing. when harley was dieing?

What was he doing while Harley was dieing?? How can this man still be on our police force when he has no more respect for his companion and fellow Officer. This makes me SICK and hurts my HEART. What is happening to our world??? I say we won't have to wait much longer before our King returns and everyone will have to make account for there actions!

Laura Juston McCausland

The omission to provide, or animal cruelty is the crime to be charged here. If he really can't see intent then it is neglect which doesn't require it as an element of the crime. It is not necessary to have intent for the failure to provide reasonable or ordinary care. The prosecutor is using jargon in an attempt to confuse the ordinary citizen with what "elements" of a crime consist are . This is cronyism at it's best. Anybody else would have been charged.

The officer was a fault here. If he left the dog in a hot car for too long, he knew the end result. I see it as negligence.

its the death of a police dog, if he killed a human officer he would have to answer for it, same for the dog he didn't get to choose to join the force.

I agree fully on that the dog was and should have the same respect as any officer should!!!
