Every time I pass Princess Vlei, I become more aware of people frequenting the area again. The developments happening there is indeed beautiful, and I cannot see that to continue with filthy parking areas and taxi ranks doing the round. It is simply not compatible with preservation...
It is both historic and social....No Mall please!
DIE STAD KAAPSTAD MOET ONS VLEILANDE BESKERM-GENOEG IS GENOEG-ONS KINDERS EN HULLE KINDERS MOET SIEN DAT DIT BESKERM IS VIR DIE NAGESLAG-DIT BEHOORT AAN ONS........................
Development over environment, economics over social well-being......concrete cannot provide the vital life-sustaining services of a natural environment, especially within our over-crowded & polluted cities.
Care of the environment is essential for sustainability of life for all.
Good Cause. Natural habitat is being destroyed at will.
There are many other areas suited for a mall than this one in the area. But money talks and nature walks :(
-------------PIC AND PAY get off the vlei and don't come back.
Everyone is saying "was" our fishing ground, "was" our playing ground, "as children, we did this and that" how many people take their children to the vlei these days to play or fish, or picnic? I was born and bred Grassy Park, I would not take my family there for a picnic today for fear of being mugged, murdered. So keep the vlei, yes, but do something to make the place a safer place for our familes to enjoy.
Do you recall when they offered train rides at Princess Vlei for children and when the fruit stall was there on Prince George Drive?
The best way to make the vlei safe is to use it. I have been there almost weekly, for walks, events etc, and while I would not go alone in a group I felt completely safe. ON Heritage day, there were hundreds of people picnicking together.
so many great memories of playing around there, even sailing on it many years ago. A mall will be a monstrosity!
with the scout camp just opposite, we would build rafts then go ride on Princess Vlei, if your raft could stay afloat, ask Donny Jurgens...
If they somehow can build the mall, but incorporate the vlei, almost like they have done at Canal Walk, that could be nice. Could make life easy for the Retreat, Grassy Park, Lavender Hill people, and surrounding people, who do not have to go too far for a mall. Most people seem to enjoy the malls these days, some's favorite hang outs.
