Everyone is saying "was" our fishing ground, "was" our playing ground, "as children, we did this and that" how many people take their children to the vlei these days to play or fish, or picnic? I was born and bred Grassy Park, I would not take my family there for a picnic today for fear of being mugged, murdered. So keep the vlei, yes, but do something to make the place a safer place for our familes to enjoy.

Do you recall when they offered train rides at Princess Vlei for children and when the fruit stall was there on Prince George Drive?

The best way to make the vlei safe is to use it. I have been there almost weekly, for walks, events etc, and while I would not go alone in a group I felt completely safe. ON Heritage day, there were hundreds of people picnicking together.

so many great memories of playing around there, even sailing on it many years ago. A mall will be a monstrosity!

with the scout camp just opposite, we would build rafts then go ride on Princess Vlei, if your raft could stay afloat, ask Donny Jurgens...

If they somehow can build the mall, but incorporate the vlei, almost like they have done at Canal Walk, that could be nice. Could make life easy for the Retreat, Grassy Park, Lavender Hill people, and surrounding people, who do not have to go too far for a mall. Most people seem to enjoy the malls these days, some's favorite hang outs.

I with so many others have fond and wonderful party memories of THE vlei, it even has a nickname "Gala land" & in the 80's it was the place either before going to a club or after the club and we would have braais till next morning. The proposed development will strip the community of a Legendary landmark which many will be saddened.

Why must we spoil what GOD has given to us to relax and enjoy the vlei. No to malls.

Imagine we go to residents in an area and say that sorry we need to bulldoze your house down because we want to build a mall! Just think what an uproar will be caused! That's what these people are trying to do to the defenseless and absolutely vital biodiversity in this area. What did the species in this area do to deserve this?? It just sickens me that some people think so little of non-human things yet without biodiversity we as humans will cease to exist!!! These small minded, selfish,...

These small minded, selfish, uitgevriet developers are just thinking of themselves and the people who are for this development are so gullible for believing this will somehow improve their lives. Just think... "He who dies with the most toys still dies." "It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment - Ansel Adams"....Ai

This is one of the most beautiful natural vleis around - leave it well alone for future generations. It should be 'declared a monument' - and have the same status as Rondebosch Common has.

As children growing up in the nineteen-fifties in nearby Plumstead we made canoes out of second-hand corrugated iron roof sheeting, dragged them on heath-robinson trailers behind our bicycles, and paddled on Princess Vlei. Many children and many families have enjoyed this facility. Visit the Blue Route shopping mall in Tokai, note the built environment around it, and ask: "Do we want to replicate this here?"
