just poked through the comments...like any news, only the spectacular, the dramatic, and (generally) the negative is selected for transmission...as it is guaranteed to attract attention. far more pet animals are subjected to what would be called "torture" - in the US particularly - than all market (meat, fur, leather, etc) ones combined, as those processing market animals are not emotionally involved. (this is not to say I necessarily approve of their practices, only to point out that they...

(this is not to say I necessarily approve of their practices, only to point out that they are more barbarous than "cruel" per se.)

the fraction of the Chinese people involved in harvesting cats is probably about as large as that of Americans still trapping beaver...and about as businesslike about it. the best protest is to (a) support programs that help feed the Chinese people, and (b) do not purchase products that contain fur trims. the feline brutality described is not government-sponsored, nor is the Chinese government able - or likely - to influence it in any meaningful way.
