When I was 15 I witnessed a law enforcement officer shoot a dog 13 times before she finally died. He thought she had rabies. He did not wait for animal control. He did not feel bad about it. He was flirting with me at the same time. A deviant sexual hostility released as violence against a poor defenseless animal. I am 60 now and always think of her as I hear of other dogs helplessly go down. This coward and show off would not listen to my screams of protestations. My mother later followed up with the autopsy report as she was as enraged. I think if she and other adults had been there to witness and protest on this quiet country road, it would have turned out differently. This poor beloved girl was dehydrated and had distemper. A few years ago in TN, a officer shot and killed the family dog as she jumped from the car when he ordered the driver (her guardian) out of the car. The vehicle was filled with family members on a road trip including small children. The officer immediately began firing and killed the family dog in front of the children. There was no provocation to shoot. She just jumped out of the driver's side like any interested dog would do. No growling, no aggressive behavior. The dog was a bully mix and this was the reason. It was later determined that this officer had absolutely no reason to pull this car in the first place as he made a mistake and should have pulled another one. I hope these officers and their precinct pay out the nose or this horrendous ignorant error in judgement. I hope a law comes into place to keep these arrogant show offs in control of their weapons when it comes to all animals who are confused and doing what they do naturally when under stress and guided by fear. What will happen with Star now?

It is my humble opinion that if you want to get down to the REAL problem, ask the world's media to show the whole truth behind their sensastionalised reporting of attacks by "dangerous" dogs. That is what has given so many wonderful breeds of loyal and loving dogs their "dangerous" reputation. Over the years, I have seen, read and listened to hundreds of reports, from across the world, that have condemned dogs like Star as "dangerous" without a shred of genuine proof. ANY breed of dog has the capacity to be dangerous from a chihuauha to a great dane. It all depends on their upbringing, just the same way as with our children.
If a parent brought up a child to be vicious, they would have the full weight of the law come down on them. The same principle should apply to dogs and their owners. Nobody has the right to assume a dog is vicious just by it's appearance, just like the thought of whether or not a hoodie and jean wearing teenager is a mugger. So let's see irresponsible owners being penalised heavily for the way they teach their dogs to be vicious. The police officers involved in this instance should be charged with attempted murder for the way they made assumptions about Star and their total disregard for proper procedure. They should also be thrown off the police force and banned for life from owning any animals or firearms. Star should be hailed as a hero for having the determination to come through this ordeal and face up to the rest of her innocent life. If anyone should foot the bill for Star's medical treatment, it's those who did the damage in the first place.
It is also my opinion that the moral responsibility rests firmly with the misrepresentations of the media over the years, in their unjustified condemnation of certain breeds. In the wake of a spate of dog attacks in the 1980s and 90s, the UK government rushed the Dangerous Dogs Act through parliament, which started the media circus of "dangerous breeds" and led to thousands of family pets being wrongly destroyed because of their breed. This came about because of the flawed Act that was based on wrong attitudes towards certain dog breeds and false claims of dog attacks, among a long list of maladministration instances of the Act. The media jumped on their sensationalising bandwaggon and did untold damage to the reputations of many loving and loyal breeds.
I know that I have covered a few angles here but this post includes what I have seen and experienced at first hand over the years. I very nearly had a dog siezed because of his breed, a Rottwieller cross, when someone decided that he was a viscious dog and faked dog bites on his arm to get him destroyed. Hooch was a rescue dog who I had befriended and gained the trust of. It was only because of most of his teeth being missing, due to the abuse that he had suffered, that I was able to prove the bites fake and keep him. Less than a year later he died. Cause of death was not clear so I will never know for certain why he died. He looked mean but that was not Hooch. He was nothing but gentle and loving.
I'm sure that there will be many different thoughts out there from all kinds of people about what I have written here. Have your say, I will answer as many as I can and I tank you for reading this.

God Bless Star and all the animals that are need a home. I am a feeder of feral cats also. Been doing it for about 4 years. I wish people would just fix their dogs and cats and this problem of overpopulation would just go away. Good Luck Star!
this is a shocking story when Star was only trying to protect her owner, which is what these dogs are bred for, to love and protect their families not what press see them as because of bad humans. I do hope she makes a full recovery and goes to a understanding forever home.
Has the officer been punished for his recklessness. Why doesn't the NYCP pay the vet bills? They did this! This is an outrage!
The story doesn't say why they had to shoot the dog or doest that matter.
