I am signing the petition, but also doing research on China. It is nominally a Communist country, but almost devoid of Socialism. Children are obliged to take care of their parents when they are sick, or can no longer work. Men earn more than women, and are therefore more desirable. Despite China's size, it does not have enough arable land to feed its current population of 4 Billion. Making matters worse, much of the industrial development has taken place on river deltas and coastal plains,...

Despite China's size, it does not have enough arable land to feed its current population of 4 Billion. Making matters worse, much of the industrial development has taken place on river deltas and coastal plains, which are the most fertile lands for farming. Supplies of fresh potable water are also low. They must reduce their population, or the next generation will starve. How should they do it? Facing the same situation, how would you propose handling it? I don't currently have answers, and I welcome your input!

I am not signing the petition because the people of China are suffering under the weight of their country's population. In any other circumstance I would be shocked at the idea of a One Child Policy- in the dire circumstance China is in, such a policy, to my personal beliefs, is an sad yet necessary solution. This does not mean I am pro-gendercide- I believe the only way to stop this practice is to change the culture of China, and this starts at policy. Earnings for the same job must be the...

This does not mean I am pro-gendercide- I believe the only way to stop this practice is to change the culture of China, and this starts at policy. Earnings for the same job must be the same for both sexes. Mandate equal opportunity. I have heard women of my own milieu say that boys carry on the family name but girls don't, making a boy is desirable- hyphenate last names to reflect the importance of both the mother and father. A policy and (gradually) ensuing culture change is the answer, not the continuation of overpopulation.

A system of social insurance might make sense as well. I expressed my ambivalence about signing in my post. I recognize that policy is the issue, and the simple fact that China cannot feed its current population is proof. Thank you for your response!

Get your facts rights people. In china you basically need to have a son if you want to be looked after in old age. Your son in china is the one who will be your main supply of income once the parents are to old to work as the daughters in Chinese society are to get married off ad serve their husbands. So this being said if Chinese people have two girls they get a pension which is equivalent to about a bowl of rice a day. First u must stop poverty in china before u can stop this.

We need this world without discrimination , we want equality and freedom for all , then we can say we are real human. Without girls there is no mother no sister no wife and then no life.

This is an outright lie, & falsehood , the population control in China back in the late 80's to early 90's was instituted because of necessity, and the way it worked is that couples, were allowed to have only one male child.

You are misinformed here...statistics speak, of course you need birth control in countries like China, but it does not give any right for preferences or forced abortions, family planning in form of preventive measure is necessary in all countries. China has not officially supported killing of females in the past, but due to narrow minded policy and ideas about the likelihood of males being able to support families more than females in traditional Chinese cultures, traditions, poverty and...

China has not officially supported killing of females in the past, but due to narrow minded policy and ideas about the likelihood of males being able to support families more than females in traditional Chinese cultures, traditions, poverty and lack of respect for females have brought on this imbalance. Over the last decade as this policy is starting to show off imbalances, educated people has a different view..but there are 800 millions in poverty still in the countryside..

I read about these situations decades ago, it has been known by many all along, but nobody bothered much because it was just women, which is a commodity even in Europe. Seen in a larger context all sex magazines degrading females and presenting them as commodities, really support the kind of thinking leading to such actions. And those magazines are perfectly legal all over Europe even in Norway, nobody seem to bother much about what is implied by selling such magazines. Or they would simply...

Or they would simply without too much trouble be able to make that also illegal.

Soory I am not misinformed, I have very good contacts there and family member has been there for years!! Yes, statistics do speak if there are great ratio differences it indicates what goes on, compared to other countries, but also this is not secret anymore, and has been known for decades by journalists and human rights people. I have seen programs on it and there are groups working inside China trying to save as many as they can even today.

A better approach than abandoning kids or killing them, see this video @ 43:30, great example of a small town in India educating their people to have a sustainable society! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa3ZDEZj3P8, the whole video is worth, but at least those few minutes show a much better approach to this problem. That's why I support this petition!
