I totally agree that slaughter is NOT and never will be a humane way to deal with the issue of excess and unwanted horses; if all else fails, euthanasia should be employed by a licensed veterinarian to end the animal's suffering quietly and painlessly.

However, as with the dog and cat overpopulation problem, the brakes need to be applied to indiscriminate horse breeding. Only then will we see a significant reduction in the number of unwanted horses, and therefore a reduction in the number...

I think it works either way... tell the consumer what they are really eating and stop the demand = breeders will HAVE to stop. Either way it's done the laws have to be enforced and they are not, and I doubt they will be until it's a BIG problem

That too, Angela! People need to be educated also about the dangers of eating drug-tainted horsemeat. The ENTIRE picture of horse slaughter has to be presented to the public, not just one facet of it, but everything about the issue.

Sally, I agree..I'm akways telling people to stop breeding their cats snd dogs...we don't need anymore, the shelters are over crowded as it is. People who own horses need to be responsible as others with cats and dogs, stop breeding them! PLEASE BE THEIR VOICE!

Horses are beasts of burden, and have served mankind for thousands of years - THEY ARE NOT FOOD!

Good point, Hal - guess I just grew up around horses (as well a cow we eventually ate),
chickens, pigs and a couple turkeys. I guess I just "feel" for horses, not so for the others.

You are so wrong. Yes, they eat dogs & cats in China---do we send our slaughtered dogs & cats to them?..............NO. They eat horses overseas and we send our horses to Mexico and Canada to be slaughtered. Just plain WRONG. Come on....Look at it like it really is. Look outside of the box. You have an animal you love (I hope), if you could not take care of it, would you want it slaughtered and sent overseas? God, I hope you're shaking your head NO.

@Brian Mayday, I always thought donkies, and mules were beasts of burden! But either way, they need to stop the abuse and inhumane treatment of these beautiful creatures! <3

To my knowledge I've never had horse meat; but the other day I saw lean ground buffalo meat at the store and hear it's as good or better than ground beef. That said, I think horses are a special breed of animal and above the human food chain, something to be revered for the sake of beauty and purpose.

When the killing of cats, dogs and horses stops I might care about a human. It's hard for me to care about a person being born that is only going to take up more space and resourses than we have and may also be raised by the same humans that are murdering our beautiful pets, for no good reason other than they love to murder.

I think humans who say they don't want smoke or second hand smoke. They exercise, go to the doctors the minute anything is wrong. They stay away from chemicals are not really protecting themselves or there families by eating meat that is not inspected or can be inspected like beef. Horses have many chemicals in them in there bodies. They are not livestock they are pets and working animals. I KNOW someday we will realize this. As they found traces of Bute in Slaughtered horses and Bute is deadly to humans.

As I understand it, this pledge ended in July 2012. Regardless, I wish to express my heartfelt tears for these horses who give their lives for the sake of their SOB owners.

Mari Divkson...I'm with you. I pray every day for the innocent...and these animals are indeed innocent. There will always be people out there that want to make the innocent suffer. We need steeper laws..laws with teeth in them. Not just lip service. God bless all rescuers, foster homes, animal lovers.....
