My last 4 dogs have been rescues. Phoebe was a super smart lab-chow mix. Next came Murray, a beautiful dalmation with yellow spots instead of black. The third was Belle, a retired racing greyhound. And now I have Susie, a Rhodesian ridgeback mix. She's about 6 years old, and I've had her for 4 years. All four have been wonderful, funny, smart companions. I will always get rescue dogs for the rest of my life.

I just adopted 3 kittens. It is so fulfilling to watch them grow up knowing that they will never want for anything.

When I was a kid, my dad brought home a stray we called 'Lucky' - a beautiful black cocker spaniel. Apparently someone had just dumped him at a gas station my dad had stopped at. I could never figure out why this great dog got dumped. He was a beautiful, loving dog. He knew tricks so someone had obviously loved him at some time. EVERY companion pet should be able to enjoy a long, healthy, happy and safe life with a wonderful family who truly values them and gives them the love, care,...

We have a black lab, chow mix that no one wanted. He is the sweetest dog, but if you don't know him, he scares the pants right off of you. My son has him in Mount Vernon. I agree with you that rescue dogs are great. They need LOVE and return it 150%.

I adopted Mocha aka Mews from the Beverly Animal Shelter on July 9,2012. His roommate, Cappuccino was adopted from the same shelter on April 10, 2009. Both these cats were homeless and now they live here with my roommate and me. They are very happy cats and that is good. I am glad I did.

You have alot of years ahead of you to be sure. I have already had a few talks with people as we never know what tomorrow may bring. And I have agreements where my dogs will be taken care of if anything does happen. I'm with you, I don't want them back in a shelter

Please consider how much your animals keep you young and active. I, too am 65 and have some health problems but every day I am greeted by Rowan, Tenzin, Sampson and Calamity and they respond to my 'bad days' with such soft, sweet love. We will live longer because of them and they will have greater lives because of us. Oh, and A Very Happy Birthday to you.

2 things: you can always adopt an older pet, especially since they are more difficult to adopt out and would be more in keeping with your timeline. Second, make sure you have a trusted friend or relative who will look after your pets if anything happens to you. Consider mentioning it in your estate planning.

Enjoy being with your two lovely dogs and enjoy yourself - you may live to be 100! I hope you have a long and happy life, wishing you all the bestx

I'm now 70 and have 2 cats, who are 8 years old. I was fostering them at first as kittens, since I already had two, but these young ones adopted me. Now my older two are gone and the two who remain are extra loving. The rescue group I worked for, and from whom I got these kitties, would take them back if anything happened to me and I had no other arrangements. Some rescue groups are like that and would help you out, should you not outlive your pets. Pets give me so much to smile about that...

Pets give me so much to smile about that they make me feel much younger and healthier than the numbers would show. One friend adopted her cat when she was 90 and stopped traveling on vacations. Don't let your age deter you from giving a pet the love he/she needs, which they return tenfold. >^..^<

Hey, I will be 68 soon and can't wait to adopt a rescue! I figure I have a long life ahead of me! I have had 2 rescue dogs and they are the most grateful animals. In his later years I found out he was diabetic, but he would wait patiently for me to give him his insulin shot. He unfortunately passed away from a...

Shortly there after I adopted another rescue.

All our three dogs are rescues. The latest one Spud (as seen left) we adopted when he was 7 - only went to the rescue to buy a book! I will never buy another pet, I will always rescue.

Each and every one has a distinct personality and individual needs, just like other family members.

Had the chance to honour my pledge with "BOO" a black kitten (barely 6 mos old) saved off the street, neutered & vaccinated along with his mama and 3 other black brothers just before Halloween. They've all been adopted already!

We have one baby named Lucy who we rescued from a breeder that was getting closed down and the other baby, Wee Willy from a couple who needed us to foster a mini chihuahua. She ended up being pregnant and we successfully found homes for the pups but kept one.

I am a firm believer in "adopt not shop". My furry grandbabies were adopted. I love them so very much. I feel giving a furever home to a loving, deserving furry baby who may never get a chance to know the love and give all the love in return in so importnat. I hate kill shelters and am so against them. Please give these furry little wonders a chance. xxxooo

I would love to. Adopt a pet,but my landlord only allows one an it has to be small an I like to have an other dog,but we have to pay rent for pets which I think that's not rite we are trying to make this mess up world a better place for pets, but our landlords don't agree which makes me think that their are people in this world who don't care about cruelty to animals, sometimes I think that if we were in animals shoes would we like to be mistreaded or not allow in a decent home, that reminds me...

Got to stop the private breeders, they flood the country with unwanted dogs which land up in the SPCA looking for good homes, hence this pledge. I am sure there are some good breeders out there, but for others it is a quick way to make money and the health of the mother and puppies is of no real concern.

Our cat that we had rescued 14 yrs ago passed away and I went to my local animal shelter and adopted a kitty. :) It was overwhelming to see soooo many animals there! Yes, it costs, but it is sooo worth it to save an animals life and give it love and affection and spoil it! I couldn't live without having an animal. The love they return is indescribable!
