According to the Federal Government’s Energy Information Administration (EIA), the U.S. is estimated to contain more coal reserves than any other country in the world, or 27% of the 2006 recoverable coal reserve estimates of around 800 or 900 gigatons. According to the Federal Government’s Energy Information Administration (EIA), the U.S. is estimated to contain more coal reserves than any other country in the world, or 27% of the 2006 recoverable coal reserve estimates of around 800 or 900 gigatons. The largest share of American coal reserves lies under lands owned by the Federal government, not private corporations. Accordingly, as American citizens, voters and taxpayers, we are the civic equivalent of ‘stockholders’ regarding the Federal government’s coal reserves portfolio. Accordingly we should all responsibly expect and respectfully demand that President Obama and Congress protect American miners as they work long and hard to extract this vital American energy resource. Even if the regulation laws are changed, that doesn't change the fact that coal is an inherently filthy commodity. Testimony and history have both shown this to be true. All coal miners and workers should have enough medical coverage to provide adequate care whenever they get sick, it ought to be in the union contract somewhere. This is one of those types of employment that carries its own set of risks, and employers should be made to provide for that risk.

Minimally, this is owed to the coal miners for the many generations of very hard workers that have taken enormous risks (some with fatal results) to keep our country going. We owe them this much!
