I don't get paid for sick days over here either!!!!
i think some companies do and some dont claire and the way our country is going at the miniute they will probably put a stop to it
Probably, I had 6 months off with my op with no pay, it was a struggle but I had to get well enough before going back otherwise I'd be off again. The system is not good xx
i agree with you claire the system is rubbish i was never off long term but i no they got 6 months full pay and then half pay for 6months and then if your off they had to applie for ssp xx
They're lucky to get that, ours don't pay at all, we just get ssp from day one
that was when i worked for the council but i ended up leaving due to time off anyway if and when i decide get another job when fit ill probably be same nowhere else will pay that x
I noticed its very hard finding a job with good benefits these days, just rare to find. I did have one in a Uni and ended up being pushed out cos of my health, could never get another with those benefits since, its such a shame
Actually I had one job in Ontario that gave us 2 weeks paid vacation - 10 paid days off - which we could use as sick days if we wanted to, but 10 paid days off however we chose to use them, so technically no actual paid sick days. It was the cheapest company I've ever worked for.
I had another job in Ontario that gave us 2 weeks paid vacation AND 10 paid sick days, or a couple of days over 10 as long as it was "within reason".
Here in Saskatchewan, at least where I work, we get 3 weeks...
Here in Saskatchewan, at least where I work, we get 3 weeks paid vacation and 0 sick days.
So I'm pretty sure there's no federal "guarantee" of paid sick days in Canada either.
Why should your employer pay you for being sick? Doesn't make sense to me.
I guess the idea is that you can afford to take the day off to get better instead of coming in to work, being useless, infecting your coworkers, making yourself sicker because you should be home in bed, etc. It's actually better for everyone involved, including the company you work for. I hate it when sick people come in to work, but if they can't afford to stay home and lose a day's pay, I can't blame them.
I work for a school board and I get at this point 2 wks paid vacation and about 60 paid sick days. As my years with the district increase the vacation weeks increase and the sick days increase and there is a sick bank that we all contribute some of our sick days to incase of longer term illnesses. This is a union, so maybe all unions are similar, not sure.
oh and to add, I don't use many of the sick days just because I have them, too busy at work to take a lot of time off but it is good to know that if I get too sick to go in but can't afford to miss a day then in this case I don't have to worry about that, I can stay home get better and not infect others. We also have a limited number of family leave days in case our children get sick as well as bereavement pay. Very lucky, and I appreciate it, especially as a single mom.
I thought we are entitled to a few/month; at least we used to be, although I never took them even if I was in pain because I had too much work to do to take a day off, and so did my mother.
...Queen of pain
not done yet!
except for one day when I was bleeding to death on my way to work and I practically passed out...(got fired for missing work that day) usually would have been at work already and have to just keep on working like that...bloody all over, doing laundry in the bathroom sink...and you wonder why "we just don't get along"
my ex-sister-in-law, who decided to keep the $150K that she and my ex-brother owed me, said in that bloody scene, "Everybody bleeds"
So if I'm a small business owner with one employee, I have to pay them for not coming to work when they are sick? How long do I have to pay them? One day? two days? 10 days? Who does the work while they are gone? Do I hire a temp and pay them too? OK so now what happens when they call in sick and they aren't really sick? Do I get to fire them and sue them for fraud? While I get the concept of not wanting to lose pay when you're sick. This is such a blanket petition. If someone...

While I get the concept of not wanting to lose pay when you're sick. This is such a blanket petition. If someone works 15 hours a week at McDonalds should they be paid when they call in sick for an 8 hour shift? I can see if someone works 30 hours a week for a company of more than 50 employees, because the employer may have insurance to pay for it. But in a small business situation, it's not necessarily possible. Plus, the work get's backed up, customers get angry, you lose money that wayllll And I'm sorry, sometimes you just have to make a decision... Should I make my family suffer so my employee's family doesn't have to? I don't think so, I own a business for the benefit of MY family, NOT my employees family.
I was only saying that this was a very "blanket" petition. I absolutely believe that employees should be taken care of, but if you're going to demand to be taken care of, it should be a little more specific.
ignorant and heartless. grow a soul.
her in belgium the boss pay's the sick worker 4 14 day's then the heald system kick's in, and the worker is payed in full by the healed care, so no loss in pay and no stress for the boss
that cant happen u can not cheat by saying ur sick just to get of work coz a docter has to look at u and give u a sicknote if ur longer than 14 day's sick u have to go evey week back to the docter 4 anew note and those docters are realy strickt so u will not get away by faking ur illness
health care and education should be free in this country.
They are-its called public primary and secondary schools and ERs.
Jennifer Phillips ummm lol thats not free... maybe public schools but thats about it....
Nothing is free. Anything billed as "free" is horrendously expensive, especially if managed by government.
Why do so many European countries give so much more time off - sick days and vacation than the U.S. We work harder and harder each year and receive less and less.
Would you like to live in any European country for the rest of your life? One benefit of being an American is that nothing prevents you from living wherever you choose.
I sure would. In fact, I do!
Liz, you asked why? Because they actually understand that a healthy population yields is a strong and vibrant community and an unhealthy population yields more disease, crime, despair, and unfulfilled, unproductive lives. Have you looked around at what most of us are turning into? Obese, diabetics who hate themselves and take it out on everyone else around them. We can thank satanic capitalism (not talking about the ethical capitalism version that died decades ago), for this. Now we...

First we need a law since common sense isn't common that gives assistance to the caregiver. My life partner of 22 years had to quit his job to take care of me.The" system" states I make to much money for assistance to pay for gas for the car to get back and forth to the doctor. They say use the bus service provided by the stàte. I see people waiting in the heat or cold for the buses to return to pick them up to take them home. Food stamps $16 for the month for two people are they for real....

I'm on my 4th diagnosis of cancer since 1993 so that should tell you how long he has been out of work.Trying to keep the lights on paying the mgt and medical bills something gotta give. People that really need help can't get it but those with 4 and 5 babies a choice they made on their on can get it all.
I hear you Cuz, i know two people who have worked 30 or more years without any tyoe of assistance and are now sick and can not get any help. This is why we need to clean out the House and the Senate and elect new people who will be working for our benefit insteand of working for Corporate America.
I feel your pain! I've been in your shoes. I'm praying for you.
First, MOST family caregivers are mothers. This just goes right along with the other areas of our lives where women/mothers have no rights to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" without dire consequences. Look anywhere in the system and you will see that mothers' rights are FAR BEHIND women's rights and with either of them we are ruled by a male dominated world where we are expected to contribute to the family FINANCIALLY and TAKE CARE OF THE FAMILY as the primary caregiver as well.
Civil rights, human rights, women's rights, mothers are neglected in all areas.
There is an idea that I have had since I worked for a major corporation for almost ten years and saw the workforce both come from OUTSIDE THIS COUNTRY and was DOMINATED BY MEN, even at the cost of twice the salaries of women in the same occupation. This is just one more travesty of justice against mothers and women. I lobbied for, and after being reprimanded by human resources, won the right for pregnant mothers and mothers who had just had a baby, to work from home. Telecommute. It was hardly a common thing in the 1990's and management did not like "losing control" of their cheap labor workforce. So, women who ONLY DID COMPUTER WORK, tracking shipments and monitoring progress of inventory in route, were eventually allowed to do their jobs from home. They were happier, more productive and their families more stable than those who worked up until delivery and came back to work when their baby was six weeks old... That being said...
If we could GET OFF OF THIS 40 HOUR STANDARD WORK WEEK and the government would subside a fourth job for every three employees, there would be much less costs for unemployment and other areas of financial support, 25% more people would have jobs and everyone would only work 4 days per week, and have three days with their families. In any job where the occupation is covered by more than one person at a time, they could TIME SHARE their jobs and take whichever three days off (Fri/Sat/Sun or Sat/Sun/Mon) or whatever combination worked for that industry. We are all slaves to corporate greed and government dysfunction andit is time for a new "rule of thumb" for our living arrangements within a society that demands we work to survive and provides minimal growth in the job markets for 80% of the workforce.
YES, mothers need more flexible time, the family primary caregiver, whether mother or father, needs more time off and the workforce of AMERICA needs to evolve with the times and let us get out of the factories and back to our families and this should be a primary objective of our nation's government and corporations.
IT IS TIME FOR THE PEOPLE AGAIN, big business, government corruption and greed have been in charge LONG ENOUGH. I will sign and share this and ANY PETITION THAT RETURNS THE RIGHTS OF THE INDIVIDUAL CITIZEN TO A FAIR AND EQUITABLE standard of living, which was taken from us in the INDUSTRIAL AGE.
IT IS TIME FOR CHANGE. The oppressor NEVER grants freedom willingly, it must be DEMANDED by the oppressed. IT IS TIME FOR US TO DEMAND OUR LIVES BACK, END WAR, SUPPORT THE FAMILY UNIT, END ABUSE AND CORRUPTION OF THE MONEY IN OUR GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, AND TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK FROM TYRANNY AND GREED. Please sign and share this and other petitions that support FAMILY RIGHTS. We have worked hard and long and neglected our families in order to financially survive and we have lost our children to a system that is corrupt and steals them for profit through the TITLE IV-E funding provided for foster care and forced adoptions. THIS WORLD is out of control, run by organized crime and greed and IT IS TIME FOR CHANGE! thank you all for all you do... carry on. that is all.
Iain....your an idiot and you are mean ! So get your skanky butt to work and make a ton of money so YOUR wife and the mother of YOUR children can stay home and not have to go to a job outside of the home. That way she can focus on taking care of your home , children and you too. That is IF you have a wife and children . And if you don't ...then please don't speak ! God Bless You !
Inane, I'm sorry your Mother hates, but I'm grateful you can't have children.
Let's Help Everyone Have Access To Decent Health Care! Health Care is a Basic Human Right and Not Just A Privileged!
Let's Help Everyone Have Access To Decent Health Care!!!! Health Care is a Basic Human Right and Not Just A Privileged!!!!!!!
I hear u there amen to this
I feel like good health care and education should be free in this country.
Robert Wilhite I agree with your statement.
Robert Wilhite : Amen to that!!
Everyone HAS access to decent healthcare, it just isn't free which is what you are shilling for. Almost any thing can be considered a "basic human right" by those who want someone else to pay for it.
I can't believe we haven't done this decades ago. Long overdue
We haven't passed/ratified the EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT either. We are still 3 states short, and the last state to ratify was 30 years ago...
As a nation, we talk about supporting family values, but we don't walk the path.
We need more women in politics, but the countries which have more women politicians, their laws support families from maternity leave, childcare and sick leave for both mothers and fathers.
Reduce our (#%*&($DEFENSE#$&(* spending by half, and we could easily fund these programs.
crazy isnt it!!
Dorothy Ann Cole I agree with ur coments, u r absolutly rt
Dorothy Ann Cole, I agree with you wholeheartedly on your post. We could get by with half the defense budget we have, but the Republicans cry foul if you so much as suggest reducing it while they laugh all the way to the bank because they hold stock in companies with Government contracts who get paid entirely too much for their products just because they are Gov. contracts. Nothing like sticking it to the tax payer twice.
Denise perhaps bush AND obama are deuce, hard luck.........
