I noticed its very hard finding a job with good benefits these days, just rare to find. I did have one in a Uni and ended up being pushed out cos of my health, could never get another with those benefits since, its such a shame

Actually I had one job in Ontario that gave us 2 weeks paid vacation - 10 paid days off - which we could use as sick days if we wanted to, but 10 paid days off however we chose to use them, so technically no actual paid sick days. It was the cheapest company I've ever worked for.

I had another job in Ontario that gave us 2 weeks paid vacation AND 10 paid sick days, or a couple of days over 10 as long as it was "within reason".

So I'm pretty sure there's no federal "guarantee" of paid sick days in Canada either.

Why should your employer pay you for being sick? Doesn't make sense to me.

I guess the idea is that you can afford to take the day off to get better instead of coming in to work, being useless, infecting your coworkers, making yourself sicker because you should be home in bed, etc. It's actually better for everyone involved, including the company you work for. I hate it when sick people come in to work, but if they can't afford to stay home and lose a day's pay, I can't blame them.

I work for a school board and I get at this point 2 wks paid vacation and about 60 paid sick days. As my years with the district increase the vacation weeks increase and the sick days increase and there is a sick bank that we all contribute some of our sick days to incase of longer term illnesses. This is a union, so maybe all unions are similar, not sure.

Colleen Burns

oh and to add, I don't use many of the sick days just because I have them, too busy at work to take a lot of time off but it is good to know that if I get too sick to go in but can't afford to miss a day then in this case I don't have to worry about that, I can stay home get better and not infect others. We also have a limited number of family leave days in case our children get sick as well as bereavement pay. Very lucky, and I appreciate it, especially as a single mom.

I thought we are entitled to a few/month; at least we used to be, although I never took them even if I was in pain because I had too much work to do to take a day off, and so did my mother.

So if I'm a small business owner with one employee, I have to pay them for not coming to work when they are sick? How long do I have to pay them? One day? two days? 10 days? Who does the work while they are gone? Do I hire a temp and pay them too? OK so now what happens when they call in sick and they aren't really sick? Do I get to fire them and sue them for fraud? While I get the concept of not wanting to lose pay when you're sick. This is such a blanket petition. If someone...

While I get the concept of not wanting to lose pay when you're sick. This is such a blanket petition. If someone works 15 hours a week at McDonalds should they be paid when they call in sick for an 8 hour shift? I can see if someone works 30 hours a week for a company of more than 50 employees, because the employer may have insurance to pay for it. But in a small business situation, it's not necessarily possible. Plus, the work get's backed up, customers get angry, you lose money that wayllll And I'm sorry, sometimes you just have to make a decision... Should I make my family suffer so my employee's family doesn't have to? I don't think so, I own a business for the benefit of MY family, NOT my employees family.

I was only saying that this was a very "blanket" petition. I absolutely believe that employees should be taken care of, but if you're going to demand to be taken care of, it should be a little more specific.

First, MOST family caregivers are mothers. This just goes right along with the other areas of our lives where women/mothers have no rights to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" without dire consequences. Look anywhere in the system and you will see that mothers' rights are FAR BEHIND women's rights and with either of them we are ruled by a male dominated world where we are expected to contribute to the family FINANCIALLY and TAKE CARE OF THE FAMILY as the primary caregiver as well.

Civil rights, human rights, women's rights, mothers are neglected in all areas.

There is an idea that I have had since I worked for a major corporation for almost ten years and saw the workforce both come from OUTSIDE THIS COUNTRY and was DOMINATED BY MEN, even at the cost of twice the salaries of women in the same occupation. This is just one more travesty of justice against mothers and women. I lobbied for, and after being reprimanded by human resources, won the right for pregnant mothers and mothers who had just had a baby, to work from home. Telecommute. It was hardly a common thing in the 1990's and management did not like "losing control" of their cheap labor workforce. So, women who ONLY DID COMPUTER WORK, tracking shipments and monitoring progress of inventory in route, were eventually allowed to do their jobs from home. They were happier, more productive and their families more stable than those who worked up until delivery and came back to work when their baby was six weeks old... That being said...

If we could GET OFF OF THIS 40 HOUR STANDARD WORK WEEK and the government would subside a fourth job for every three employees, there would be much less costs for unemployment and other areas of financial support, 25% more people would have jobs and everyone would only work 4 days per week, and have three days with their families. In any job where the occupation is covered by more than one person at a time, they could TIME SHARE their jobs and take whichever three days off (Fri/Sat/Sun or Sat/Sun/Mon) or whatever combination worked for that industry. We are all slaves to corporate greed and government dysfunction andit is time for a new "rule of thumb" for our living arrangements within a society that demands we work to survive and provides minimal growth in the job markets for 80% of the workforce.

YES, mothers need more flexible time, the family primary caregiver, whether mother or father, needs more time off and the workforce of AMERICA needs to evolve with the times and let us get out of the factories and back to our families and this should be a primary objective of our nation's government and corporations.

IT IS TIME FOR THE PEOPLE AGAIN, big business, government corruption and greed have been in charge LONG ENOUGH. I will sign and share this and ANY PETITION THAT RETURNS THE RIGHTS OF THE INDIVIDUAL CITIZEN TO A FAIR AND EQUITABLE standard of living, which was taken from us in the INDUSTRIAL AGE.

IT IS TIME FOR CHANGE. The oppressor NEVER grants freedom willingly, it must be DEMANDED by the oppressed. IT IS TIME FOR US TO DEMAND OUR LIVES BACK, END WAR, SUPPORT THE FAMILY UNIT, END ABUSE AND CORRUPTION OF THE MONEY IN OUR GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, AND TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK FROM TYRANNY AND GREED. Please sign and share this and other petitions that support FAMILY RIGHTS. We have worked hard and long and neglected our families in order to financially survive and we have lost our children to a system that is corrupt and steals them for profit through the TITLE IV-E funding provided for foster care and forced adoptions. THIS WORLD is out of control, run by organized crime and greed and IT IS TIME FOR CHANGE! thank you all for all you do... carry on. that is all.

We need more women in politics, but the countries which have more women politicians, their laws support families from maternity leave, childcare and sick leave for both mothers and fathers.
