School music has saved my life. As a child growing up, I had learning disabilities. Back then ADD, short term memory, and processing issues went undiagnosed and ignored. I believed that I was just stupid, until I joined marching band and choir. Marching band, Choir, and drama gave me a reason to believe in myself and not give up. I have passed this love of marching band onto my children and my daughter is not majoring in music at college and will someday be a high school band director.

I can SO identify with this! I thought-in fact a whole lot of "proffesionals" thought that I just had a learning disability because I was "emotionally desturbed" But it was undiagnosed ADHD--had to be, because my dr at home diagnosed me as being hyper when I was just 5. I did horrible in ALL subjects at school (except reading because I loved to read fiction...it took me away to another place where there were none of my daily struggles). But when I joined orcrestra (played violin) and chior,...

Oops, I meant that Anneliese is now majoring in music, not not majoring in music.

Please make sure that she takes a good minor to go with the music major...so she has another course of action to go into. Because the way that music is getting cut from school programs, I would hate to see her work hard to get a music teaching degree...and have no school to hire her. It's already bad and getting worse-music and arts are becoming like tumbleweeds in the ghosts towns we used to call great schools. So sad...

And you were NEVER stupid, Serena...we all helped each other at MCC...I so miss those days of our study groups at Wags...you, Beth, Lester...sigh. Good times...and better memories.

Many countries are introducing instrumental music as a standard subject (the UK) is the latest. The benefits to a child's overall education are proven and well documented.

I was BLESSED to be able to be in a MUSIC CLASS, throughout my middle school years and high school years. The experience of singing in a choir and musicals, will FOREVER be in my heart. And the BOND that you make with your peers, will also NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. PLEASE...every student should be afforded the opportunity, to EXPERIENCE and SHARE his/her LOVE/TALENT of music. And, since we're on the topic...I'd like to take the time to THANK my MUSIC and CHOIR TEACHERS. THANK YOU, MR. JOHN LLOYD...

Band was my most important class. I learned teamwork, salesmanship, and the value of a strong work ethic. Music is not the icing on the cake; it is the cake itself.

Parades, weddings, funerals.....all have music. Where would we be without it, yet society seems to take it for granted.....hmmm.

To everyone out there, especially the Secretary of Education, I speak from personal experience of how music programs in school has profoundly affected me from schoolastic, emotional and spiritual level. I came from a critical background that took away whatever self-esteem I had possessed and left me with no way to express myself. When I enrolled in school in Riverside, Ca, and took the music course, it was like a new found lease on life and propelled me into what I am today. It gave me...

I came from a critical background that took away whatever self-esteem I had possessed and left me with no way to express myself. When I enrolled in school in Riverside, Ca, and took the music course, it was like a new found lease on life and propelled me into what I am today. It gave me the tools to raise my self-esteem to higher levels and to become a renowned singer and recording artist that I probably would never have become in my life.

I URGE YOU & IMPLORE YOU SECRETARY OF EDUCATION TO THINK TWICE BEFORE PULLING THE PLUG ON THE MOST POWERFUL TOOL WE HAVE IN THE WORLD TODAY. TO PUT IT ANOTHER WAY, WHAT WOULD OUR WORLD BE LIKE IF WE HAD NO MUSIC? IT WOULD BE DRY, EMPTY AND LOST WITH NO FEELING.

Thank you for your attention....Robbie Britt.
