I remember Ferdinand's death and it just makes me sick....

Wait..the president of the US decided to slaughter horses? Are you sure it's not some lobbyist petitioning congress? Please post a link that shows me where Obama is the force behind this. I'd be very interested to read it.

If there is a push to open the slaughter houses it is because of the drought in the West / Midwest that has led to a shortage of hay... and thus an overabundance of homeless horses that are malnourished... apparently there are Indian Reservations that are overrun with feral horses... Horses have never stopped being slaughtered - they just now make an agonizing trip to either Canada or Mexico (the worse of the two as they have little to no regulation about the slaughter or transportation of the horses). There are animal rights groups on both sides of this issue... but like a lot of things, there isn't an easy solution.

Im sorry but they are necessary! Til people stop breeding crappy horses or anything with reproductive parts there will be a need for them. Same goes for dogs, cats, etc!

To permit, sanction or encourage the slaughter of horses for consumption by humans, is to go backwards. To permit, sanction or encourage the slaughter of horses for consumption by humans, is to go backwards. Evolution is not just a physical change in the life of the planet, it is also a change in attitude and perception. We have moved on in our relationships with many animals, and while this evolution in attitudes is a "work in progress" as regards animal farming, and protection of wildlife, there are certain species who have been accredited with a level of intelligence, and been awarded a special place in our hearts, and a status beyond that of "food".....Horses, along with dogs and some other species, (elephants, apes, donkeys, cats etc.) are recognised by the majority as being "friends" to humans. They trust us, play with us, exercise with us, accompany us, work for us, and engage in sporting activities, not just for us, but WITH us.....they go to war for us, and sacrifice themselves for us. There is an empathy between the species, an understanding, a compassion which has developed, between these animals and humans, and they have been elevated to a place in our hearts and sentiments which is beyond that of "meat"......to permit profiteers to abuse the broader love of horses that most human beings have, is a regression that is unacceptable. FIGHT FOR THE CLOSURE OF SLAUGHTERHOUSES, THE CESSATION OF SLAUGHTER OF HORSES FOR MEAT, THE PREVENTION OF BREEDING HORSES FOR FOOD, AGAINST THE LIKELIHOOD OF ILLEGAL SLAUGHTER OF WILD HORSES, AND THE TRANSPORT OF HORSES TO OTHER COUNTRIES FOR SLAUGHTER,...FOR THE SAME REASON. BOYCOTT BUTCHERS WHO SELL HORSE MEAT, BOYCOTT ANYONE WHO INVOLVES THEMSELVES IN THIS PRACTICE FOR PROFIT. Thankyou. Kx

Don't agree with it at all, Peter...not for salami, not in France, not in USA.....not ANYWHERE for FOOD! We wouldn't eat children......well, for many people, horses, cats, dogs etc. are family, and are equal to children. Kx

As far as I'm concerned, and I'm not really a horse person but I DO love animals... Obama and his legislature are the only "things" that need to be exported and/or slaughtered. So there!

Thank you Carol, another thing is most of the horses in America, except the mustangs (and even some of those with a prior catch) have been given some sort of wormer, Bute (anti-inflamatory) or medication, which then taints the meat and becomes toxic to humans and animals eating this meat. So my question is, besides the thought of eating horse meat (ACK), how the hell can they make money off of horse meat or slaughter process? The vets can humanely put a horse to sleep, but to see them...

The vets can humanely put a horse to sleep, but to see them struggle through a slaughter house, scared and that being the last thing they know, just fries me. Horses are a sentient animal....meaning the are capable of love, and feelings, same as humans. LOL, sorry, now you know just a bit more about horses.

what happens to all the horses that are old, sick and lame that rot away in someones yard? They get shipped to Mexico or Canada or they die starved and sick in someones yard. I would rather have the plants open again in the US than ship the horses thousands of miles in cargo trucks with no food and water to another country. horse slaughter is SAD, but its needed. Thousands of horses are unwanted and neglected, I would rather them be sent to a plant than keep them rotting away. Many people...

Thousands of horses are unwanted and neglected, I would rather them be sent to a plant than keep them rotting away. Many people also can not afford to euthanize a horse at home. Backyard breeders have created this problem. A petition needs to be started to insure that when plants are opened again that they are maintained and operated in a HUMANE manner. We need a form of population control because there are so many unwanted horses out there. I would rather send horses to a slaughter house than have them starve and die in a field over 30 years. THINK ABOUT IT.

Horses kept in pastures that are not maintained suffer nutritionally because the grass needs a chance to recover and regrow and if it doesn't it limits the nutritional value. If an owner has a starving horse on it property I will bet it doesn't float teeth, trim hoofs, deworm, clean or groom them. Let alone provide basic veterinary care. If you google 'starving horse' you'll find plenty of photos of...

If you google 'starving horse' you'll find plenty of photos of neglected horses. These are the horses that are better of being sent to a slaughter house than living in their current conditions for years on end. Sad, but true.
