I disagree with BSL. Not all dogs of a certain breed are dangerous. Legislation should be in place to safeguard against INDIVIDUAL dogs that are a threat.

Let's apply the BSL logic to humans: if one person of a particular race poses a threat then all people of that race pose a threat. Racist and a completely invalid argument.

Why is the logic sound for dogs?

I think we should arrest and "euthanize" George Foreman. Sure, he is lovely guy, a Baptist minister, a successful entreprenuer, author, father and role model. But, he's a BIG GUY and he is trained to FIGHT - Heavyweight Champion boxer of the world TWICE. Think of how many people he hurt! He could hurt someone NOW. He could probably break you in two if he wanted to! And besides, he's black - and we all know blacks comprise 15% of the population, but commit 75% of the crime.... So why...

So why not arrest and put George Foreman "down" to protect the public??... If this sounds silly or offensive, it SHOULD. But, it is simply BSL logic applied to people. Start using the "George Foreman - trained fighter" logic and see what kind of reaction you get. BSL is nothing more than "Jim Crow" for dogs. It doesn't work, and it needlessly destroys lives. Those areas that have BSL should try focusing on regulations and outreach to promote RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP to protect both people AND dogs! It is a MUCH better use of public funds with a more productive outcome.

Bob Cogs Great point Bob. The owner should take responsibility for their pets. If the pets get aggressive and there is cause for concern then that issue should be dealt with logically by the owners of the pet. There are so many dogs that are much more aggressive than pit bulls that are legal in many places.

Maybe pet shelters and other non-profit (or for profit) organizations should setup free or low cost training seminars to help people understand and raise their dogs according to their breeds. If this information was out there in multiple different mediums, including hands-on workshops, then I think that these problems would be reduced drastically. Education is the key here, not fear and blanket killing of animals because of their breed.

@Bob Cogs, BSL does not identify INDIVIDUAL dogs that are a threat. BSL identifies ALL dogs of specified breeds as a threat whether or not an individual dog is a threat. And there in lies the problem with BSL. A dog that is not a threat is considered erroneously a threat because of the dog's breed and not because of the dog's temperament or deeds.

Additionally, BSL does not REGULATE identified dogs. BSL KILLS identified dogs and, in the BSL cases that I am aware of, has done so without...

Additionally, BSL does not REGULATE identified dogs. BSL KILLS identified dogs and, in the BSL cases that I am aware of, has done so without confirmation of the dog's breed, without confirmation that the dog is actually a threat, and without considering non-lethal options for dogs that are a threat.

My answer to your question: 'And how does one determine a certain dog is a "threat" exactly?', is: A dog is a threat if there is a societal consensus that the dog's temperament or deeds are dangerous.

In the BSL cases I am aware of, the societal consensus of danger is, or was, lacking.

any dog can go bad bob but usually it is because of humans being stupid that they turn maybe we should euthanize all the people who cause the problem that would solve it then the animals would have a chance.

Dear sir, madam,

We, concerned people for all over the world, are asking you to please start an investigation into BCC regarding the Lennox case.
We strongly believe things have been covered up and the truth has not been told to the public.
We also believe that Lennox's dog warden, Alexandra Lightfoot, lied under oath, stating Lennox was the most dangerous dog she had ever met, while video tapes show Lennox licking her face and being submissive to her.
We know we can't bring Lennox back, but we do want to know what really happened in BCC and that the truth will come out.
Justice needs to be done and the truth needs to be told.
Therefor we plead you to investigate this case and bring out a news report.

For Lennox's sake, for all innocent dogs sake.

We thank you.

Sincerely......

Lennox was well gone before July 11th...BCC and the Judge that upheld the order because even he knew that Lennox had passed over, need to be held accountable for their lying, perjury, and manipulation of the law....BCC needs to answer to animal cruelty charges also...the least that should be done is for all those involved to be stood down pending a full investigation.

Investigation or not, it is now up to the people of BELFAST to VOTE OUT their City Council and overturn the BSL ordinance. No one else can do that but them. Please support any efforts you see by those in Belfast, who opposed the euthanization of Lennox, to accomplish these ends.

There are too many complex issues to be covered here but any dog may bite--statistically small breeds are recorded with highest biting incidence--however it usually humans who are responsible--there should be age limits on owning dogs-I have seen young teens with bull breeds who are clearly using the dog as a status symbol--and god knows where their parents are! breeding is a mine field with so many dogs being bred irresponsibly by people who want a quick buck and couldn't care less about the dogs welfare!

Completely agreed. I view APBTs as the "Canine Ferrari" due to their power, speed, handling and agility. You would no sooner let your 10 year old drive a Ferrari than they should be "raising" a APBT, AmStaff or other "bully" breed! They do not know the "rules of the road" at that age - How can they possibly teach anything to their dog?? WHERE ARE THEIR PARENTS?? >:(

Breed Specific Legislation is a lazy approach by governments who want to be seen as doing something. If protecting citizens is their aim then this is a very irresponsible, prejudicial and cruel law that has been proven not to work. The powers that be need to address the real issues that lead to dog aggression rather than target innocent breeds. It is time for this law to be overhauled and proper legislation put in place which looks at the individual deed of a dog.

Unfortunately, their aim is not to protect citizens, but to protect and advance their careers. It's all politics.

It's time for the truth to come to the surface, so this practice can be stopped once and for all! It's NOT the breed of dog that's evil. It's the PERSON who trains these dogs to be so who are evil / disturbed! Maybe it's time to regulate the people and leave these wonderful animals in the hands of their loving families!

It's like putting a human in prison just because he looks like he's going to cause trouble.
It wouldn't be allowed, nor should it be with animals of any kind.
I believe that a survey has been done to find out which type of dog postmen and women fear most, far from it being a big dog, the daschund (spelling) came out a clear winner.
Are governments going to ban these? I don't think so.
