"Sugar in the Raw"(tm) a popular "natural" product from Maui is created using controversial agricultural practices. Most egregiously, HC&S (the company that makes it) harvests their sugarcane by burning it. With 35,000 acres on a small island, this results in a massive release of CO2 and choking smoke which is damaging residents' health. Sugarcane can be harvested without burning (as is done in most of the world) and we would like HC&S to stop cane burning now.

My understanding is fire is a great way to replenish soil for fresh beginnings, but the smoke from the fire is of course burning other things like precious cells in people's respiratory tracks... so what is best for the long run for both the people and the crops is questionable... close the roads during smoke when the wind is blowing and its burning time? It is important to keep and respect the therapeutic and healthy elements of fire too, so history is good... of course there are always more than one way to get to a similar result...

I've been going to meetings to stop burning cane for 30 years. Is anyone listening?
It's truly a health hazard.

Since moving to Kihei, I deal with the smoke and ash several times a week, it makes my allergies hypersensitive and I'm often sick to my stomach and migrains result...weekly! Awful stuff! Have been to the doctor more times in the past three months (due to the cane smoke) than the past 3 years! Just unreal this burning is allowed to happen when it's been outlawed in most other countries, this is hurting way more people than it's not, please help stop this ASAP!

What are the sugar canes being burned for? What a bummer to be sick in such a beautiful place!

think about what your doing, no-burn sugar cane harvesting requires modifications to harvesting equipment which is very costly and it also takes longer for the machines to harvest the crop as there is more 'rubbish' for the harvesters to deal with as it has not been burt away. the costs of the modifications and extended harvesting times will be past on to YOU the consumer.

also lengthier harvesting times will cause the harvesters to use thousands of liters of extra diesel, you must also consider the pollution created by obtaining the oil required to make diesel and the refining process. so which ever way it happens the environment is going to loose.

The cane burning has definitely affected my health - I often wake up with sore throat, itchy-watery eyes and other allergic reactions. The smoke depletes the immune system tremendously because the body is constantly trying to expel the toxins. Over the summer my whole family got sick with flu like symptoms and hacking cough that took months to clear up! The cane burning really has to stop. It just is not good for our health! How can we support Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company to...

Wow, that's a real tough one Barbara as these are just very old practices. The only other way they could do this is my pulling them out by hand or with machine. Is there a reason why they burn? Does it fertilize the soil or kill off other things in the soil to prep it for the new crop going in?
