On thursday we headed to the airport at 5 am to catch a 6 am flight. They were burning sugar cane directly right of mokulele hwy. The cane smoke was so thick we couldn't see in front of us. There was so much smoke we could barely breathe not to mention I have asthma. I understand that's early in the morning however they should have at least shut the road and had people go around. The smoke, ash, and dust this company causes makes the air so bad in Kihei that our five year old little girl can...

The smoke, ash, and dust this company causes makes the air so bad in Kihei that our five year old little girl can not go out and play with others on the play ground due to smoke, ash and dust NOT TO MENTION she goes to school at Kamali'i which I miles from a cane field this really needs to stop. We've made numerous complaints to the department of health I really hope this petition helps as they seem not to care about any of our complaints!

Are you forgetting about the pesticides and chemicals used to fertilize the crops as well as the miles and miles of plastic irrigation tubing that burnt with it. This isn't a very comprehensive petition but I'll sign it anyways. The problem isn't just the smoke and the ash in the air it's the entire industry from the ground up. It would be nice to see the government step in subdivide the land and give subsidies to local farmers to start farms and grow crops that can sustain our society here...

Oh yea that's right I forgot there's deadly chemicals (developed by Monsanto) in the ground that would probably cause you cancer if you ate anything grown from that ground.

When we lived in Kihei the smell of smoke and large amounts of ash on our cars was disgusting! Shouldn't happen to such a beautiful place :-)

I signed the petition too Heidi and will try to get as many people as I can to do the same. I can't believe that is going on in one of the most beautiful places on earth. What's the matter with those crazy people? Has anyone tried to get everyone to stop buying their sugar until they change their practices? It's always about the money. I hope you get thousands of petition signers. Love you so much!

Please help to stop the practice of burning cane fields on Maui. This company Alexander & Baldwin has 36,000 acres in cane. They take the water across and pump to the fields in drip tubes. Burn it all up including the plastic tubes releasing toxic smoke to make you sick. Why? This is crazy. They can harvest with no burning but they rather make you sick, give you a headache and watch their costs go down so you can choke on it. So this company A&B has many pieces. Matson until they...

Matson until they spin-off this Spring. They have the developers (owning Maui Mall, Maui Business Park 8 million SF on Maui & Oahu) and also HC&S making the raw sugar in Pu'unene. So this plant has smoke, right? Dept. of Health must make sure the smokestack is clean, see Clean Air Act. The fields? Who cares, burn 'em up says the DOH. Not part of the Act, only the plant. INSANITY.

Problem is you have targeted "Sugar in the Raw" as the bad guy. Only one of the consumers. They just buy it up and put in a little package so everybody thinks its more healthy (wrong). This is the Sugar Foods Corporation, Sun Valley California. Sweet & Lo, Blue Diamond Almonds, etc. They brag someone uses their products 1000 times every second. Not me but OK. Fact is 90% of the raw sugar from Pu'unene goes straight to California and gets put through the refining plant in Crockett CA, C&H Sugar. Make pretty and white, finish off what the old dinosaur plant on Maui can't handle for the truck drivers and fatties. Only 10% stays "raw" and HC&S sells as Maui Brand or sells to Sugar Foods Corporation. If you want to read more, it is here:
http://thomson.mobular.net/thomson/7/3285/4610/ and you can see on page 14.

GM of HC&S is 38 year old Rick W. Volner, Jr. In 2011 the agribusiness at A&B made 22 million profit on 161 million in revenue. Pretty good work. But necessary to burn doing it? Right now HC&S is licking their chops. 90% goes to CA and gets processed and then sold in midwest and west USA. Big drought will hurt sugar beets in the midwest, that they compete with. You watch. 2012 profits soaring.

I encourage the residents of Maui county to adress the issue of burning cane with the dept. of health and Alexander & Baldwin Inc. It I
