I buy tobacco, because I smoke. The Government collects revenue from this which goes towards supporting our services such as NHS etc. This includes INTERNATIONAL AID. If this revenue wasn't collected, income tax would go up for EVERYONE. At the same time, there are many plantation workers making a living (at whatever level) and supporting their families. If everyone stops smoking (as seems to be the trend / intention from various direction), income tax would increase due to the lose of source & would more than likely increase duty on other items / commodities. At the same time, the plantation workers would be out of work, so more aid would be sent from governments. Then we have a problem... we haven't got enough in the pot to maintain the amount of aid, how is this solved another increase on revenues & tax in order to pay it. Consequently, is it not cheaper for the country to smoke & use revenue from that to keep certain duties down for the rest. Therefore by the rules of advocate, smokers are helping to keep costs down to the complete population as well al keeping plantation workers in a job to support their families!!!!!!!

Garry Reid "the plantation workers would be out of work" - in actual fact the ground would still need workers to work whatever crop the now-available ground would be used for!!!

Garry Reid What I find amusing is they raise the prices of cigarettes everytime we turn around. The cigarette companies are putting posion in the cigarettes without people knowing and keeping it from the Gov. This is WRONG! The cigarettes you smoke today, are not the same cigarettes you were smoking in 1970 or 1980. I believe that everytime they raise the price of cigarettes, they need to raise the price of, ALCHOHOL. Then you would see them all shut-up. Drinking KILLS!! ...

Cigarettes should be considered a drug because the addiction level to them are the exact same as a schedule class I, II, and III drug. Raise the price of Alchohol!!

Seriously, Garry Reid? You are attempting to JUSTIFY tobacco by threatening higher taxes? Forgive me, but you forgot to add into your equation the small factor of all the taxes and monies for programs that will no longer be needed to pay for dying smokers who have lung cancer, emphysema, heart disease and strokes, asthma and a whole list of other smoking related diseases. Your thought process is hugely misguided.

The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to overturn a $28.3 million wrongful death verdict in the case of Benny Martin vs. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., this will affect thousands of pending cases against tobacco companies. The tobacco Companies were able to break up the Class-Action and now have to face individual victims one at at time. The $millions could add up fast. I'm soooo sorry. http://medicaldaily.com/news/20120326/9365/tobacco-supreme-court-smoker-case-verdict.htm

The ONLY way for this to stop, is to STOP MAKING/SELLING cigarettes!
How can anyone think that you can sell cigarettes, have commercials saying how terrible they are and they will kill you and then you can still go and purchase them?
The tobacco companies have killed and made ill millions of people yet they are still allowed to make/sell cigarettes!
Where on earth is the logic in this?
Someone has to be concerned about people rather than the all mighty dollar!

At a time when we are all concerned about the rising cost of medical care and insurance, it is time that we put a premium on all those who cause their own harm like smokers, heavy drinkers, drug users, and the morbidly obese gluttons, etc., that refuse to live a healthy lifestyle. Insurance companies and the government should refuse to cover any illness that is self inflicted and put the cost right back in the laps of the abusers. Make them pay the full cost of their medical coverage and...

Insurance companies and the government should refuse to cover any illness that is self inflicted and put the cost right back in the laps of the abusers. Make them pay the full cost of their medical coverage and expense. Maybe that would change a few behaviors and mtake the need to keep raising insurance and medical premiums to a minimum for the rest of us.

My Husband and I like to go to casinos and usually have a good time. I wish we could ban smoking in them as these people for the most part, that smoke there, are very militant about being able to smoke. Next time an Indian casino gets approval, I think one of the conditions should be that they have at least have a large non-smoking area equal at least to the smoking area with seperate ventilation. I know my participation in attending casinos is optional but it is a source of a lot of fun...

I know my participation in attending casinos is optional but it is a source of a lot of fun too. Some of the smokers are so rude they hold their cigarettes so that their smoke goes directly in your face and refuse to move it when asked. That is when I break out my fan and send it back to them! I have a fan and I'm not afraid to use it! But wouldn't it be better if smoking were banned in all public places. The Indian casinos also sell cigarettes tax free so many people go there just to buy them. They are not affected by taxes and sell them at a discount. We all pay the price for this practice.
