In Canada the slaughter plants are inspected and there is regulations in place for humane treatment. Maybe you people should have worked towards better regulations with shipping, transport and handling, making sure those aspects are humane and respectful, rather than closing a market that, unfortunately or not, is necessary. You and I may not eat horse meat, but there is a demand for it throughout the world. So, economically speaking, regulating the horse slaughter industry (for humane and respectful treatment) and allowing the product to get to market would be better for the economy as well as these horses.

Dara Wall. Sence you are pro slaughter Why are you even at this petition? No it is not humane. American horses are given all kinds of things to keep them healthy and is not for human consumpation. There for US horse meat is posion. It is so not necessary. What is necessary is to put a STOP to this crap. Kill buyers out bid families that would give a horse a great life. There are meny beter places for these horses. People Like YOU MAKE ME SICK!

Hahaha, you're funny in your messed up way! Read the articles and research pro slaughter. Canner buyers do not outbid 'families'. In fact, if they know they are bidding against an individual and not another buyer, they will back down. Please, enlighten me with the 'better places' for these unwell, lame, dangerous, unwanted horses. Full rehabs or rescues? No room, no money. Euthanize at home? With the depression and the drought, most can't afford that either. Then there would be the cost of...

Oh, but I'm sorry, you don't want to know the facts, you just want somewhere to throw your anger and judgement. To answer your question as to why I am here, as I've just stated, a person needs all info to make an educated judgement about something. And I've heard it said, "know thy enemy".

Why did you remove my post for the free horses you can have, Shelly? Transport from central Alberta for four horses shouldn't be too costly.
Anyways, We can make this slaughter issue as humane and respectful to the horses as possible with better regulations and inspections. The end result is a necessary by-product of an overpopulated, owner ignorant or naive horse population. Unfortunately you don't want to 'fix' the issues surrounding this evil, you just want to cast it out altogether. ...

Were there enough money and land to house all these stray unwanted, unfit, unsuitable, dangerous horses, that would be utopia. Alas, there is not. I have seen firsthand the meat buyers back off when they realize a 'family' is bidding against them. It is a regular occurance. I have also bought from the meat buyer after the sale as I sat on my hands too long. They also go through the horses they purchase with an eye to re-home suitable ones. They even have full time trainers on hand to make these horses more appropriate for a family to buy. We may be at opposite ends here, but I am hoping and wanting a better end for these horses. I think regulating the industry is the only way to go as we cannot allow these horses to continue to be dumped and starved because the owner has no other option and the rescues cannot take them all. I still stand behind the principle behind my first post. I was thinking of a discussion, not derogatory, mean-spirited name calling.

Help us stop this slaughter of our beautiful horses. These are domestic animals, it is like slaughtering dogs! These are a companion animal not a commercial meat.

Horses are generally regarded as under the same roof as "Man's best friend," the dog, and are treated with respect. By slaughtering and eating horses we are lowering the bar for treatment of all animals. Horses, throughout American histiory have helped to win crucial wars, sacrificing their lives in the line of fire, they have saved the lives of policemen and fire victims. They should not be regarded as food. They are beings that have enriched our understanding and respect for all living...

Horses, throughout American histiory have helped to win crucial wars, sacrificing their lives in the line of fire, they have saved the lives of policemen and fire victims. They should not be regarded as food. They are beings that have enriched our understanding and respect for all living things. Let us not reverse that. It is immoral and a mean-spirited message to our children.

I grew up around horses and it wasn't until I was 16 that I first heard the term "dogger" I am as horrified by it now as I was then.
