Children are people now, not just potential on legs!
10 minutes is definately not enough time for lunch! School is meant to benefit the children not just get them out of thier parents way! At least for primary school, hours should not be extended, play is childrens work.
For the teenagers, if hours are extended then homework should either decrease or be what they are doing in those extra hours. Give the kids more choices, its always easier to excel in what you are interested in. Time to...

Thanks :D I'm doing pretty good. It may be that more parents would be opposed to longer school hours if they were'nt under financial pressure and employer pressure to work long hours. This would surely be moreso in a nation without much social welfare to fall back on. I do not understand women who fob off thier babies to strangers so they can go to work, stuff the mortgage, the kids are more important!

Having Students have some social interaction in positive structured setting will help them refocus on their school work. All work and no play makes students dull. They need time to regroup, they're children not robots. Retired NYC Special Educator.

How about a question of " If there should be a longer day or NOT ". Because I really do not think a longer day is the answer at all.... Separating families is only going to be a negative in the long run. And that what this is. Getting parents use to the idea that someone else is going to raise your child.

The question is moot. In many places there is a reduction of school days (euphemized as "furlough") because of insufficient funds. Tax payers aren't willing to pay for a longer school day, or even for the school year.

if they was to extend the hours all they would gain was more students that are very tired and not paying attention. why not get rid of stupid classes that do nothing to help our kids in the future. try teaching math, english, science.

When my daughters were in kindergarten a retired Principal told a group of parents that when our daughters graduate from High School they would have to know twice as much as the kids graduating from High School the year my daughters started kindergarten. That is how fast the world is changing. I do not see how we can expect kids to learn the wealth of new information without more hours. It seems to me we are talking about the quality of jobs we want our kids to have in a flat world.

The extra time could be used to:
1. Work with students that do not understand materials presented.
2. Prepare student for life skills required to sustain a healthy and financial life...financial management, time management, ect.
3. Seniors (ALL) go out and work in the field of interest for career. Mandatory! (college Prep)

Stupid idea, students don't need longer work days, just taught how to be more efficient in the time they already use. If anything, Junior and Senior year should be deleted as is; and students given the option between prep school for college and tech school. Then all the preliminary training in College before a student decides a major could be done away with.. of course this is a basic premise and a complete restructing of our present system would be needed for it to work.. Considering, how new the school system really is' ( that is many people past 60 never even went to school) there lots of room for improvement and growth, the basic is math and reading,, I think it's time to advance our levels of learning, beyond the constant repetition of elementary level education... Let's build some minds, that know how to think and do, not just repeat what others have already achieved.

My answer was science, but I also have a question/comment. Why is it when something is failing the answer is always to do more of it? Why is it that home-schoolers are doing far better than those in public schools? It would be far smarter to fix what is wrong with the whole public school program before you even consider extending the year. Kick out the teachers unions, start paying people for the quality of work they do, and if someone is not doing a good job thank them and send them on...

Kick out the teachers unions, start paying people for the quality of work they do, and if someone is not doing a good job thank them and send them on their way like every other job does. Stop wasting time on social engeneering and focus on math, reading comprehension, TRUE science and maybe if you still have time a little literature. Too much of the day is spent now trying to indoctorinate our children into a socialist society (I know this for a fact because I have to wipe this crap out of my kids minds after their blockheaded teachers put it in there).

Homework BETTER decrease! My son misses Boy Scout meetings and other after school activities now...I don't mind the extra school time if they have less homework!(and allowed a couple of snack times).
