Been there, seen that. Listened to the trappers tell me the reasons why. For the most part it was for the money for the fur. Saw beavers in the back of a truck like firewood, many missing legs or parts of their tails, lost to a previous trapping incident. Talked to the guys who said it was necessary to control the coyotes. But I lived there too, and I knew it wasn't true. We are supposed to be intelligent, so we should not have to resort to this type of cruelty. Just stupid and lazy.

You know I just read her comment and I don't think she means our ages, I think she is saying like from the Middle Ages....you know barbaric. At least I think that's what she means. She doesn't want to pick on us old people....cause we might be old but that just makes us meaner.

We must address this at the roots - and the root is that state agencies are funded by killing licenses and all the focus is on maximum killing. Wishing this away or talking to each other will not work. We are the majority. The hunters support the trappers and they are organized for POLITICAL power. They are allied with animal agriculture and the NRA. We must organize state by state to force state agencies to accept the wildlife watching revenue we already bring to state tax coffers...

They are allied with animal agriculture and the NRA. We must organize state by state to force state agencies to accept the wildlife watching revenue we already bring to state tax coffers HELPING wildlife (10-40 times the revenue of hunters even with killing licenses which just run their killing business of OUR wildlife) - we must lobby that money into legislation REPLACING KILLING LICENSES with GENERAL PUBLIC FUNDING already there, but being used for general purpose other stuff. ORGANIZE. Weeping over this will not help. START A GROUP IN YOUR STATE TO FOCUS ON EDUCATION ABOUT TRAPPING AND KILLING OUR INNOCENT WILDLIFE - ORGANIZE TO CLAIM A FIRST TIME DEMOCRACY IN FUNDING AND SAY IN OUR STATE AGENCIES!

It is the core problem. We must organize state by state to direct the huge wildlife watching money we already bring to state tax coffers (see the U.S. Fish and Wildlife 2006 Survey of economic impacts of wildlife watching vs. hunting by googling it until you find it - and compare...we bring 10-40 times the revenue of hunters to state tax coffers). Even in a huge hunting state like Wisconsin - they only generate $40 million KILLING our wildlife while wildlife watchers bring in about $160...

Even in a huge hunting state like Wisconsin - they only generate $40 million KILLING our wildlife while wildlife watchers bring in about $160 million helping wildlife - it is just not lobbied to wildlife agencies for any power. They WANT OUR MONEY IN A SNEAKY WAY - through the sales taxes so they do not give us any power. We must act now to form legislation to direct this money TIED TO POWER to state agencies to democratize the systems. Get Julie Lewin's book GET POLITICAL FOR ANIMALS at Amazon books or one of the other bookstores. What hunters and trappers know is that legislators only care about being re-elected - and they are elected by very small margins. So an organized alliance of hunters/trappers/agriculture and the NRA is what we are up against. But wildlife watchers are the dominant paradigm by far - so we have to activate them - they have learned to be passive since they have never been involved.

I hope trapping will stop. People need to stop buying animal products so there will be no demand for trapping. I can not read the articles every day, because I become too depressed. Then I am not a good animal advocate. But please spread these articles, re-post and send to your legislators. Do not be intimidated when face to face with a person who does not respect animal life. Look them in their faces and tell them this is animal cruelty, which is wrong!

the trapping of wolves is just for 'fun' for most of them...the 'meat' is un-edible (even according to people who eat woodland creatures and "varmits") they just want the wolf as a trophy and enjoy the power over a majestic animal and to observe his fear and suffering......ugly mindset!

Yes, that is an ugly mindset. The trophies and trophy owners need to be ridiculed.

We are trying to get the city of Ottawa, Canada, to adopt a humane Wildlife Strategy, but they just want to continue trapping. It's medieval, barbaric and just plain idiotic. We will continue fighting. I shared this cause, hope in our lifetime we see the end of this miserable 'sport'. :((((

Canada is also well-known for its government sponsored seal hunt by clubbing to death so the fur is not harmed. Some seals even remain conscious during the skinning-so horrific!

What is so heartbreaking about this photo - which will haunt me to my grave - is that we can see the torture and torment he has already endured, in agony and by the evidence of the club, he has been beaten, and his eye is still looking up at his twisted captor, who is taking a photo of his 'handiwork' - this is practice for humans....this trapper, if even the opportunity would relish in serial killing. The victim matters not, they enjoy the so-called 'power' and the suffering of the trapped...

Ironically, in the USA when you apply for a trapper's license, you must attend one class on 'ethical trapping' - sounds like an oxymoron to me!

It is a scientific fact that 100% of serial killers first started off by torturing animals. Something to think about...

Thank you Linda for sharing the words from an ecologist on the wrongs in trapping and starting this petition! Please continue to support Footloose Montana in our efforts to achieve trap free public lands in Montana for people, pets and wildlife! We'll share your petition. Another initiative attempt for the ballot will begin in 2013 and help is needed to be successful! It is going to take people and money to stop this barbaric indiscriminate atrocity inflicted on willdife!

Kudos to FOOTLOOSE MONTANA - a great group prevailing in the region where wolf lore is thick and falsely damning to wolves. Trapping is barbaric and cruel and should be thrown back into the dark ages. Most civilized countries have banned trapping already - we must insist that our country do the same!
