There is absolutely no need in this day and age for people to need fur coats as there are plenty of alternative more effective materials to keep warm. The Canadian government is just pandering to the vacuous airheads.

Tony. I don't believe I said anything about the Inuits or the leather industry. I don't believe in this type of slaughter. I have an opinion and I am entitled to it. As for sitting in my comfy home at my computer you know absolutely nothing about me but make those assumptions. You know nothing about what i do and how I live my life but chose to judge me anyway. What makes you better?

So just how much do you know about the seal hunt? where does it take place? What time of year? How are quotas decided? Which seals can or cannot be harvested? My assumptions are based on your initial comment dealing only with fur, and calling people vacuous airheads, people you know nothing about. So, what makes YOU better that you can judge others? At least I have your words to judge you by, and my own knowledge and study of our seal hunt, what do you have? Our Government honors a long...

Our Government honors a long tradition, and allows a reasonable and necessary harvest to ensure a healthy population. I live in the real world, where human emotions often conflict with the harsh realities of mother nature. Come join me, set your emotions aside momentarily and learn the truth about the world we live in.

I know that 27 member states of EU have banned all seal products in 2010, that Russia, Belarus and Kazasthan have banned the import/export of fur from Harp seals since 2009, that Mexico banned the import/export of marine animals including seals in 2006. That 2011 deals with China have been put on hold. That less than 17% of cod mortality is due to seals but that overfishing has devastated vast areas. That culling of other predators have had unexpected and disastrous consequences on both the prey and the predator. That Atlantic groundfish have shown evidence of recovery despite the over population of seals that is the argument put forward for a cull. I know that the department of fisheries have stated that 80% of the seal cub population in 2011 have thought to have died due to lack of ice so is there still a need? I also know the truth about this world and some of it is ugly but I don't have to sit by and let it happen, and it is good to see that I am not the only one. With regard to my emotions, that is what sets our morale code. The ability to empathise with others.

Tony Lee, PLEASE stop all that "tradition" junk.... If you are so interested in traditions, live in a cave, go hunt with naked hands and eat only what you kill YOURSELF. Yours is a long series of bullshit, the world we live in has become dangerously unbalanced, thanks to people like you. If you really want to save the world, GO VEG and stop considering yourself as a superior being when compared to animals..... you are not.

Tony, you are right: I don't know much about it beyond what is presented here. And most of us sitting comfortably in our lounge rooms continue to eat battery eggs, feed-lot beef and other much, much, much worse atrocities. But don't worry - I signed those petitions, too. Harvest what you need - but I can't see much need for clubbing the pups... and I definitely see a need for scrutiny, and restraint.

Sorry Tony. You are repeating the gov't's standard letter to justify this out of date, offensive and inhumane slaughter. I have been involved with ending this and advocating through numerous means to end the slaughter for over 30 years. To those of us who do know the truth behind it from either being on site or witnessing the smuggled videos of the truth, this is one of Canada's many routine cruelties to her wildlife and we'll allow no more. At one time it may well have been an accepted part...

At one time it may well have been an accepted part of the Canadian heritage. It hasn't been for decades. Due to pollution, climate change, overfished supplies by Japanese and Norweigian commercialo fishing, prejudice and disease, many of our wildlife is in danger. The seals and polar bears are just 2 of our species that are suffering this year like never before with the warmer waters and melting ice flows but next year it will be worse. The smashing of baby seals' heads inches from their mother's eyes, rarely kills them, they suffer for hours, they cry, and it gets worse until they are skinned alive and their bodies, free of their fur and flippers, dies a slow drowning death as they sink. No, I think we've had enough. Almost none of the meat is 'processed' and much of that goes to Alberta, for some reason.

The fishermen complain about loss of fish due to seals (overfishing)hmmm! I used to be a avid hunter, I ate what I harvested, I quit when I started witnessing poaching.I've never understood the" POACHING" (legal harvest) of seal cubs.ahh Tony Lee when did seals start migrating to Calgary! Bottom line is money (gov't business)So now we can look @ Jap poaching of whales, Chinese poaching of shark fins (other animals).
