I have been involved and aware of the homelessness in SF for decades - first as a social worker and later as a retiree. As a native San Franciscan, I am in culture shock in my own "home town" over housing costs including rentals which have been going up since the dot.com industry began. Most of my friends have moved out of San Francisco because they cannot afford the costs or the few remaining have rent control. At least we have housing - so many do not. Most of my friends have moved out of San Francisco because they cannot afford the costs or the few remaining have rent control. At least we have housing - so many do not. Homelessness is a national problem and needs to be dealt with nationally. I believe housing, along with food and healthcare are basic human rights.

I took the pledge to end homelessness when I moved to San Francisco in 1994. I have been writing about homelessness and housing issues since then. There has been an exponential jump in homelessness in SF brought on by the home foreclosure crisis. One of the most valuable things you can give to an unhoused person is just to stop and talk and get to know them. I have many homeless friends, and I learn from them every day about life's basics and what pure survival means.

It is so sad that we have any homeless people in our country....an issue that should have been addressed a long time ago. It breaks my heart of think of the women with children living in cars and on the streets and we send so much to other countries and do not take care of our own....how wrong is this?

I firmly believe that when you give them a little love, you've given them a lot. The core issue is that the homeless are isolated. Nobody wants them around. It's not rocket science how to fix this problem. If you think that once person can't make a difference. Think about this, if a community got together and and each person that wanted to get involved went out and found someone that wanted help, and worked with that one person. Be the light that shines in someone else's eyes.
