Hey Gloria, you can see all of the factors that went into each company's rating at www.free2work.org and browsing for the company. It will explain the steps that these companies take to eliminate forced labor in their supply chain.

Not For Sale I actually have that app but I haven't used it lately because I could never get it to load correctly. :( I've been following for a while now though. My Counseling Practice group in my MSW program did a presentation on Human Trafficking and we played the Free 2 Work youtube video during the presentation. A bunch of the students took the slavery footprint quiz afterwards. Even my professor said he would be thinking twice before making purchases.

I'll be giving a presentation using the same information at my field placement this coming Monday, so I'll have to report back about what they think :)

What is definition of slavery? I was always under the impression it was being forced to work aainst your will. Nowadays it seems to be defined as someone who works for less than for the same job in the west would pay.
Sure, not high income, but is that not better than no income? And child labor...maybe some of them are orphans or their parents can't work due to disabilities or illness. If someone is willing to work for what you offer, who are you/we to say they can't or shouldn't? We don't...

If someone is willing to work for what you offer, who are you/we to say they can't or shouldn't? We don't know their circumctances. They most likely don't have mortgages and car payments. THEY WANT AND NEED FOOD>PERIOD. Some companies offer a means to their nessecities.

Hey Craig, there are a ton of factors that go into determining what slavery is. You can learn more about the methodology Free2Work uses by visiting www.free2work.org and click on "What the Ratings Mean"

trouble is all the big companys like those here in england pay their staff min wages so that is almost like slave wages I worked for a food company called co-op and we normally ended up doing 60-70 hours a week for a 40 hour wage.

Minimum wage or not, did you get paid for the 60-70hrs? If so then you didn't get paid a 40hr wage you got paid a 60-70hr wage, just at a lower hourly rate. Were you forced to work there or was it by choice? This seems very irrelevant to the cause. Slavery is very, very different.

I'll be having a good hard look at this. I enjoy getting out into the mountains when possible, & I've always favoured North Face kit when I can, because it is damn good equipment. That said, if it means someone is suffering for my comfort, then I for one will change my habits.

It is definitely sad, but we are moving towards a world that is free from slavery and we need to commend those companies who do the most to fight it, while continuing to push for higher standards. Check out www.free2work.org for more grades and companies that have the best practices for labor rights in their industries.
