I'm a HUGE supporter of PETA for most of their work to protect animals and ensure they are treated ethically. BUT I think they were wrong on this one, really wrong. PETA: please focus more energy on protecting our whales, dolphins and other sea mammals and leave our non commercial fishermen alone.

PETA needs to fight what really matters...a challenge....a near to extinct animal!

Large-scale commercial fisheries are the problem, NOT local small-scale fisheries. If you're looking for a target to blame over-fishing on, look no further than the federal fishery management councils. Cascadia Times published some very revealing articles on how corruption has plagued Hawaii's fisheries for decades. Go to: http://www.times.org/archives/archives.htm and look for titles such as ROGUES OF THE PACIFIC; PLUNDERING THE PACIFIC; FOLLOW-UP; and Shopping for Scientists. Kanaka...

Kanaka Maoli practiced sustainable fishing for centuries by applying rules based on simple and honest observations. The United States invasion of Hawaii and subsequent application of "science-based" fisheries management is destroying the future of sustainability in all corners of Hawaii. The latest attack is the science of GMO.

I am sure the tuna suffered far less than what a salmon goes through when a bear or eagle rips open their stomachs while the salmon is still alive

In other words PETA wants us to stop fishing thus stop living. Shameful!

We take particular offense with PETA's national press release which included the fisherman's home address. These sorts of ridiculous attacks on people's livelihoods and privacy cannot be tolerated. http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/22924689/peta-blasts-kauai-fisherman-who-nearly-died-while-catching-huge-ahi

Aloha PETA, I am a long time supporter of PETA, the founder of Kai Palaoa (a Marine Protection Organization--www.kaipalaoa.com) and a Native Hawaiian. However, I believe PETA is misinformed on this issue. Peta might consider reviewing the Stanford University studies which looked to Hawaiian Ocean resources management as the model for global ocean and fishery recovery. It is not the Traditional/Cultural Practices still practiced by Native Hawaiians today that have caused the fishery crisis...

However, I believe PETA is misinformed on this issue. Peta might consider reviewing the Stanford University studies which looked to Hawaiian Ocean resources management as the model for global ocean and fishery recovery. It is not the Traditional/Cultural Practices still practiced by Native Hawaiians today that have caused the fishery crisis nor are these practices depleting the fish stocks. It is Corporate Fishing practices such as long liners and other abusive and unsustainable practices that are raping the sea. Native Hawaiian fishing practices are proven to be sustainable. They sustained a large population for thousands of years. The fallacy of modernity and its unsustainable Corporate TAKING is what should be sanctioned not Native Hawaiians. Let us challenge them together--because in the Profit is not a RIGHT !!!!
