If a clothesline works for me and it always has, then it should work for the White House. It is OUR HOUSE after all!!!

This is a great idea. It always saddens me when I hear that many/most? home owners associations ban outdoor clotheslines in their communities. As a member of the "White House home owners association," I'm thrilled to give my permission to the Obama family to hang a line and have their laundry staff use it as often as possible, weather permitting. I've been doing for 42 years myself!

We have had one at the White House previously. Why do you want it in a less conspicuous place?

Oh i just realized this, most countries with cold climate each have a dryer in their house, of course they'll use more electricity. Like U.S., i've never saw any clothesline these days. But in my country and other some hot climate country, its natural to dry your clothes on clothesline. Only if you live in apartment or flats which don't have space for drying your clothes naturally then we send it to laundromats. I bet if you asked some people in my country they don't even know what dryer is...

Hmm..i do hope from this petition, people will make full use of the sun for drying their clothes rather than dryers. If its winter or the weather isn't hot enough to dry your clothes then its ok to use it. :)
