Before answering the questions posed by the administrator, we should ask... what causes immigration? The main problem I think is the rapid growth of the world population, without any control. I am Italian, you are American, Chinese, Mexican, African... but these are adjectives, special features... first of all we are human citizens of the world!

USA, as a nation, has been 'open for business'; it's time for USA to be 'open for all', to go beyond free trade toward freedom for all people to join our democracy if they want to, to live here, to join us in struggling to live well, justly and to live sustainably in this part of earth.

Thanks Brian! We know people everywhere can identify with what it means to have to move and migrate for opportunity and for a better life. And since we are in this together, the first step is to understand one another and the values that bring us together in community. Help us reach more people and share the video. Thank you!

We are in crisis now because our citizens cannot all take care of themselves.. Allowing everyone to come would tax our resources to the breaking point, possibly taking to a national meltdown.. I am not anti immigration, I'm pro United States.. Everyone in the 'New World' is American.. What we are really talking about is The United States of America..

IM ALL FOR PEOPLE BETTER THIER LIFE BUT THEY NEED TO DO IT THE LEGAL WAY JUST LIKE ALL THE REST OF US LEGAL AMERICANS DID! NOT ILLEGALLY LIKE THEY DID!
THEY SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN AMNESTY FOR DOING SOMETHING ILLEGAL! THEY SHOULD GO THROUGH THE CHANNELS THAT EVERYONE ELSE HAD TO TO BECOME A LEGAL AMERICAN! WE SHOULD NOT REWARD THEM FOR STEALING THIER WAY INTO OUR COUNTRY!!!! GO BACK AND COME HERE LEGALLY!

We have a multitude of talented, hard-working people who will be the future of the United States. We cannot afford to lose them as an important part of both our workforce and a source of creative solutions to the problems we face as a nation. We need to solve this issue in a humane, productive and cooperative way.

I have a friend. She is not being deported but she is so poor that she has no access to the internet. She has a phone sometimes, a roof over her head and food on her table. She is still a member of Toastmasters. She can be so much more than she is right now. Her heart longs to be here for her 18 year old American born child. The husband she had did not care to make her legal or support her when the child was in school. I wish I could help her.

Thank you for sharing your friend's story Peggy. You are making a difference by participating here. It's important for more people to realize how integrated undocumented Americans are in communities across the country and to note how interconnected all of our lives are. Your friend and her child should not live in fear of separation, no child and parent should have to deal with that. The more people we can reach with that message and value, the better we will be as society. Best wishes.

My Wife, the Mother of my children ages 9 8 and 3, was deported because she wrote a bad check. Is that reason enough to rip a family apart?

Hello Gary. I am so sorry to hear this. I am Scottish, and live in Scotland but I feel indignation and sympathy for anyone who is treated this way. It really disgusts me. I can't describe how I feel about the fact that every human being cannot live wherever they want. I do not believe we should have borders. We are all the same race. Human. The Planet is not predudice. Does not differentiate between one species or another. One nationality or another. Makes me mad that we haven't evolved...

I am so sorry about what your poor wife, yourself and your family have been subjected to. I can only send you my sympathy and empathy but at least it is sincere and heartfelt. Kindest Regards

Gary, while writing a bad check is a minor infraction that's the chance you took when you married her and had children with her, knowing she was in the country illegally.

. What we are talking about here is not immigration.. Plain and simple when you cross a nation's borders against the wishes of it's people and the laws of that land it is an invasion.. Many of the ones you speak of are trying to make my country an addition to their's.. If their's is so great why have they come here? My ancestor came here from Europe because they wanted to become Americans.. They went through the process of long lines and uncertainties and they considered themselves...

Many of the ones you speak of are trying to make my country an addition to their's.. If their's is so great why have they come here? My ancestor came here from Europe because they wanted to become Americans.. They went through the process of long lines and uncertainties and they considered themselves 'Americans in progress'.. Some even sold themselves into slavery just to get here.. They left the old ways behind to be a part of and to help build this country.. They never tried to tell us what to do... Yes, our immigration laws need updated but that doesn't mean we should accept just anyone because they say we should.. There have always been those who did not qualify and were turned away... Don't forget that many of those wanting to bring families here have broken our laws immigration themselves..

Robin, You are exactly right !! The borders are still open..the Drug cartels are still operating on the border. Our govt. has little interest in fixing the problem.

Robin. I am sure your ancestors from Europe did not particularly want to be 'American' but wanted a better life, freedom, safety. prosperity maybe..
What is American? Never Forget who are the Americans! The Native American was looked upon as a SAVAGE because he did not live as the explorers and conquerers thought ALL people should. I am sure your ancestors had nothing to do with that genocide but really we must not forget that the America if today is not the original. It is the product of invaders and pirates.

Why can't you become a citizen? What about all the immigrants who came to ellis Island and then pledged to become citizens. Why can't you do that. I don't understand the difference. Why didn't they get green cards back then? I have heard the term, but don't really know much about it.

Hi Sheila. This is such an important question, thanks for bringing it up. There actually isn't a straightforward path to citizenship or a "line" for people to get in. At the turn of the century when people were coming through Ellis Island, the same restrictions didn't exist. Immigration documents were not actually required of newcomers until 1918, and even then, it was much easier to enter the country. More many years during the great European migration, federal oversight of immigration didn’t exist and there were virtually no laws to break. There was no border surveillance and people didn’t need to obtain visas before entering. As the Immigration Policy Center put it, “immigrants would simply arrive at ports of entry, such as Ellis Island and other seaports to be inspected, and then would be allowed in if they didn’t fall into any of the excluded categories.” I'm going to share a couple of links with you that will be helpful. The first highlights the impossible maze that is the immigration system: http://bit.ly/XeqcBI And the second is an excellent primer on Ellis Island migration: http://bit.ly/XHjJlA

I have friends who are "undocumented immigrants," and so I became involved in this issue - as a citizen, a teacher and a worship leader - through love. America at its best is about kindness, opportunity, and justice. As a Christian, I take seriously the words of Scripture: "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me." (Matthew 25:35) Let's hang on - immigration reform based on fairness for all is just around the corner.
