USA, as a nation, has been 'open for business'; it's time for USA to be 'open for all', to go beyond free trade toward freedom for all people to join our democracy if they want to, to live here, to join us in struggling to live well, justly and to live sustainably in this part of earth.

Thanks Brian! We know people everywhere can identify with what it means to have to move and migrate for opportunity and for a better life. And since we are in this together, the first step is to understand one another and the values that bring us together in community. Help us reach more people and share the video. Thank you!

We are in crisis now because our citizens cannot all take care of themselves.. Allowing everyone to come would tax our resources to the breaking point, possibly taking to a national meltdown.. I am not anti immigration, I'm pro United States.. Everyone in the 'New World' is American.. What we are really talking about is The United States of America..

IM ALL FOR PEOPLE BETTER THIER LIFE BUT THEY NEED TO DO IT THE LEGAL WAY JUST LIKE ALL THE REST OF US LEGAL AMERICANS DID! NOT ILLEGALLY LIKE THEY DID!
THEY SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN AMNESTY FOR DOING SOMETHING ILLEGAL! THEY SHOULD GO THROUGH THE CHANNELS THAT EVERYONE ELSE HAD TO TO BECOME A LEGAL AMERICAN! WE SHOULD NOT REWARD THEM FOR STEALING THIER WAY INTO OUR COUNTRY!!!! GO BACK AND COME HERE LEGALLY!

Yes! Thank you, Thomas. We want thousands more to learn about Jose's story and be inspired by the real story of undocumented Americans and how they are a part of our community. Please share the video and help us reach more people.

Jose Vargas is one in a million, not many could achieve what he has.. Not many want to.. I believe he chose not to seek citizenship, to publicize the issue..

There are many aliens from south of our borders living in this area.. Many are always running down the USA.. I ask them why they stay.. They tell me they stay only for the money they can send to their families 'back home'..

Why can't you become a citizen? What about all the immigrants who came to ellis Island and then pledged to become citizens. Why can't you do that. I don't understand the difference. Why didn't they get green cards back then? I have heard the term, but don't really know much about it.

Hi Sheila. This is such an important question, thanks for bringing it up. There actually isn't a straightforward path to citizenship or a "line" for people to get in. Hi Sheila. This is such an important question, thanks for bringing it up. There actually isn't a straightforward path to citizenship or a "line" for people to get in. At the turn of the century when people were coming through Ellis Island, the same restrictions didn't exist. Immigration documents were not actually required of newcomers until 1918, and even then, it was much easier to enter the country. More many years during the great European migration, federal oversight of immigration didn’t exist and there were virtually no laws to break. There was no border surveillance and people didn’t need to obtain visas before entering. As the Immigration Policy Center put it, “immigrants would simply arrive at ports of entry, such as Ellis Island and other seaports to be inspected, and then would be allowed in if they didn’t fall into any of the excluded categories.” I'm going to share a couple of links with you that will be helpful. The first highlights the impossible maze that is the immigration system: http://bit.ly/XeqcBI And the second is an excellent primer on Ellis Island migration: http://bit.ly/XHjJlA

Then ask Mexico and other countries to do the same thing and open their borders to the south and absorb populations of Central / South Americans. Make Bolivia as an idea happen in real life........

Stop twisting things around. Legal immigration is documented. Illegal immigration is not. You are twisting the truth and that is inhumane and thoughtless. You are trying to take an action, that is against the law and trying to make it legal.

Immigrants who cross the borders illegally are ILLEGAL AND UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS. It's a fact, so get over it. Little cry babies.

You know there are so many children born with an immagrant parent and are sometimes deported leaving one parent to try and work and raise ths child alone. and when they have to turn to help from the government for help to feed there child. a lot of people get B&*chie about them going for help. If the other parent was here and working and providing for there family there wouldn't be so much hateful people putting them down. and sapporting them for the good that they do for there own.

When one chooses to immigrate to the US or any country illegally; that person runs the risk of deportation. They should take this into account and think about the effect it will have on their children and spouse before it happens. If they chose to take the risk, then have a Plan B in place for the remaining spouse to be able to support the family without the help of the taxpayers.

are one that takes away from US and you being here illegally takes away from US. The government
here taxes us more and takes away more so you can live here - I have to pay your bills because you.
are contributing nothing to our government ($$ wise) - we can not feed our hungry, homeless, medically.
in need, protect our borders, etc. So if you want to stay do it the "Right Way" and I will fight for you - don't and I won't. If you can't be an American - GO HOME and FIX your country - now you know how.
it is to be free and work for a better life...........why are you NOT doing it for YOUR country. I do -
every day I get up and go to work, pay my taxes, protect MY COUNTRY..........if yours is so bad.
you want to leave and come to a great country - then become an AMERICAN and live for what it.
stands for - One Nation Under God with Liberty and Justice for all...........our country - our rules.
and our laws................not YOURS.
Now go do something because be an Illegal isn't working for you or ME.

I feel that laws should be followed and enforced. Why should some people not have to do things others do? I see my country changing into something that is similar to what immigrant are wanting to leave to come here.
