It's better to be happy and generous than proud. Canada is a wonderful place but as a Glawegian Kelly I don't feel pride. Just happy.

I think America is a wonderful and unique country with many different cultures . America should give a chance for those who really needs the citizenship because it could change their life in many ways

I agree Dave. I love America. Have family there. On the whole it is a great place. Like most other places on earth though, it has its bigots and Zenophobes. Nowhere is a perfect place unfortunately.

This issue needs all the support it can get from everyone who cares about people and families. It's a matter of humanity in the 21st century. It's also a truly American story and it must be told, discussed and sensibly debated. Then resolved, once and for all.

Why can't you become a citizen? What about all the immigrants who came to ellis Island and then pledged to become citizens. Why can't you do that. I don't understand the difference. Why didn't they get green cards back then? I have heard the term, but don't really know much about it.

Hi Sheila. This is such an important question, thanks for bringing it up. There actually isn't a straightforward path to citizenship or a "line" for people to get in. At the turn of the century when people were coming through Ellis Island, the same restrictions didn't exist. Immigration documents were not actually required of newcomers until 1918, and even then, it was much easier to enter the country. At the turn of the century when people were coming through Ellis Island, the same restrictions didn't exist. Immigration documents were not actually required of newcomers until 1918, and even then, it was much easier to enter the country. More many years during the great European migration, federal oversight of immigration didn’t exist and there were virtually no laws to break. There was no border surveillance and people didn’t need to obtain visas before entering. As the Immigration Policy Center put it, “immigrants would simply arrive at ports of entry, such as Ellis Island and other seaports to be inspected, and then would be allowed in if they didn’t fall into any of the excluded categories.” I'm going to share a couple of links with you that will be helpful. The first highlights the impossible maze that is the immigration system: http://bit.ly/XeqcBI And the second is an excellent primer on Ellis Island migration: http://bit.ly/XHjJlA

USA, as a nation, has been 'open for business'; it's time for USA to be 'open for all', to go beyond free trade toward freedom for all people to join our democracy if they want to, to live here, to join us in struggling to live well, justly and to live sustainably in this part of earth.

Thanks Brian! We know people everywhere can identify with what it means to have to move and migrate for opportunity and for a better life. And since we are in this together, the first step is to understand one another and the values that bring us together in community. Help us reach more people and share the video. Thank you!

We are in crisis now because our citizens cannot all take care of themselves.. Allowing everyone to come would tax our resources to the breaking point, possibly taking to a national meltdown.. I am not anti immigration, I'm pro United States.. Everyone in the 'New World' is American.. What we are really talking about is The United States of America..

IM ALL FOR PEOPLE BETTER THIER LIFE BUT THEY NEED TO DO IT THE LEGAL WAY JUST LIKE ALL THE REST OF US LEGAL AMERICANS DID! NOT ILLEGALLY LIKE THEY DID!
THEY SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN AMNESTY FOR DOING SOMETHING ILLEGAL! THEY SHOULD GO THROUGH THE CHANNELS THAT EVERYONE ELSE HAD TO TO BECOME A LEGAL AMERICAN! WE SHOULD NOT REWARD THEM FOR STEALING THIER WAY INTO OUR COUNTRY!!!! GO BACK AND COME HERE LEGALLY!

My Wife, the Mother of my children ages 9 8 and 3, was deported because she wrote a bad check. Is that reason enough to rip a family apart?

Hello Gary. I am so sorry to hear this. I am Scottish, and live in Scotland but I feel indignation and sympathy for anyone who is treated this way. It really disgusts me. I can't describe how I feel about the fact that every human being cannot live wherever they want. I do not believe we should have borders. We are all the same race. Human. The Planet is not predudice. Does not differentiate between one species or another. One nationality or another. Makes me mad that we haven't evolved...

I am so sorry about what your poor wife, yourself and your family have been subjected to. I can only send you my sympathy and empathy but at least it is sincere and heartfelt. Kindest Regards

Gary, while writing a bad check is a minor infraction that's the chance you took when you married her and had children with her, knowing she was in the country illegally.

. What we are talking about here is not immigration.. Plain and simple when you cross a nation's borders against the wishes of it's people and the laws of that land it is an invasion.. Many of the ones you speak of are trying to make my country an addition to their's.. If their's is so great why have they come here? My ancestor came here from Europe because they wanted to become Americans.. They went through the process of long lines and uncertainties and they considered themselves...

Many of the ones you speak of are trying to make my country an addition to their's.. If their's is so great why have they come here? My ancestor came here from Europe because they wanted to become Americans.. They went through the process of long lines and uncertainties and they considered themselves 'Americans in progress'.. Some even sold themselves into slavery just to get here.. They left the old ways behind to be a part of and to help build this country.. They never tried to tell us what to do... Yes, our immigration laws need updated but that doesn't mean we should accept just anyone because they say we should.. There have always been those who did not qualify and were turned away... Don't forget that many of those wanting to bring families here have broken our laws immigration themselves..

Comprehensive Immigration Reform has been important to me ever since I took a course over 2 years ago at my church, First Unitarian Universalist of San Diego, entitled "Immigration As A Moral Issue". I truly hope we accomplish real reform this year.

Humane reform is a moral issue and a human rights issue. Remembering that we all care about keeping our families together and that undocumented Americans are already integrated in our communities is so important, we hope people will recognize that and do the right thing, the rules have to reflect our reality.

BUT ILLEGAL ALIENS ARENT OBEYING OUR LAWS OR THEY WOULDNT HAVE CAME HERE ILLEGALLY! IF WE GIVE THEM AMNESTY THAN WHAT I TAUGHT MY CHILDREN ABOUT OBEYING THE LAW OR YOU WILL PAY THE CONSQUENCES WILL MEAN NOTHING! SO IF MY CHILDREN GOD FORBID DO SOMETHING ILLEGAL ARE THEY GOING TO GET AMNESTY I KNOW THEY WONT SO NIETHER SHOULD ILLEGAL ALIENS!! HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHAT THEY DO ILLEGALLY JUST LIKE YOU WOULD IF WE WOULD DO SOMETHING ILLEGAL. THEY ARE LUCKY THEY ARE SENT BACK AND NOT SENT TO JAIL LIKE WE WOULD BE IF WE DID SOMETHING ILLEGAL!!

There are many aliens from south of our borders living in this area.. Many are always running down the USA.. I ask them why they stay.. They tell me they stay only for the money they can send to their families 'back home'..
