To fine ANYONE for showing pride in their native American heritage is a crime and also a gross insult to the US Constitution!! The school board should publicly apologize to this lovely girl, immediately remove any fine, and hang their heads in abject shame!!! They seem to forget to whom America belonged before the voracious and greedy rape of the land by outsiders!!!

What is wrong with Americans!! It seems most of them are crazy. Shooting everything that moves, being ridiculous over a feather, and when they aren't killing everything else on the planet they're murdering each other. I'm so grateful I'm not American.

I am with you Jo and I am an American....we are so violent a nation yet we cringe at a baby breastfeeding - and supposedly are a free country yet we cringe if we see somebody naked on a beach - I lived in the south of Italy and have travelled in Yugoslavia when the war was going on - those people were killing each other - the people from Bosnia and Serbia - yet supposedly they had reasons - not a right reason(s) - but here we have so many mentals who kill for the sake of killing - animals...

Idiocy is universal. However, as a hunter, I have to defend my kind. I do not shoot everything that moves. Nor do the majority of hunters. Those that do are called poachers and are pursued and prosecuted as criminals. In my state, wildlife conservation is funded by the sale of hunting and fishing licenses and the Pitman-Robertson Act that imposes an excise tax on sporting items like guns, ammo, fishing tackle, boats, and archery gear. As with any group there are hunters who lack ethics, but...

As with any group there are hunters who lack ethics, but most Americans don't hunt, and of those who do the majority do so legally and ethically. I agree violence is a problem, as it is in many (all) other parts of the world, and this argument over a feather is more than ridiculous, but I wouldn't trade the freedom I enjoy here for any place in the world. After all, I am still allowed to speak out about this issue without the fear of retribution.

I would so much like to support this, but here is my problem. It would open the door for racist low lifes to do likewise, and that I wholeheartedly do not support. Find me a way around that, and I will sign the petition with a joyous heart.

If a student wore something offensive on their mortarboard they should be required to remove it or not be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony. Anyone is allowed to display a cross in their yard, but if I burn one in your yard it's a hate crime. But displaying a symbol of your heritage or patriotism or religion etc. should be protected. This isn't a petition about allowing display of racist symbols it's about free speech involving a young woman's ethnicity and heritage. If you...

If you can't support this kind of free speech, how can you support it at all. After all, free speech often gets a little uncomfortable for some people, but is still the cornerstone of the foundation of this country. So, if you still can't sign this petition because it might open the door for something uncomfortable, even though what you are really doing is defending our Constitution and its first amendment, then I agree, you are taking the coward's way out.

Sports teams can disrespect and use Native Americans as mascots but this student cannot show respect for her heritage...something is wrong here. I wonder what her school mascot is?

In this country we are taught to be proud of our heritage, unless your Native American. This hypocrisy needs to end....

What I am reading here seems like knee-jerk reactions to something we probably know little about. A graduation is not about one individual.....what if the skin heads wanted to show their national pride. That could be very disrupting. Sometimes, you have to give those who make the rules the benefit of doubt until you know what you are talking about. Maybe, there is a history we don't know about concerning this?

The School Board must rescind this exorbitant and blatantly unfair fine. They should make a public apology to Chelsey and all of the students. Their actions show disrespect to First Nation people and to all students, faculty, and families present, saying that the individual student and his/her heritage does not matter, only uniformity in external dress. What does THAT teach...that what one wears is more important than what is in one's mind?!
