In England, Pit Bulls are known as the nanny dog because they are so gentle with children; as Heather says, its the people, not the dogs.

In England pitbulls are banned. https://www.gov.uk/control-dog-public/banned-dogs We called them nanny dogs, find a few clips of Little Rascals, they had Sparky a pitbull who watched over them ..

And from a quick search, here are three examples of the proven point of how seriously, selflessly, sweet, precious pittys can be (and many more where these came from!) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUV1oTciznE , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75GEzD6wh8o , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLnhy6oHQ1M

This is absolutely true. But people tend to only see how an animal acts and then think that is how he/she acts naturally, completely neglecting the heavy influence of the training and treatment he/she got from the people.

My pittie is a Nanny dog! He absolutely loves my 2 granddaughters. When my youngest granddaughter was just learning to walk....he would let us know when she was 'sneaking' to the stairs and when she was upstairs, he would position his body between her and the stairs....NO way was going to fall down the stairs on HIS watch. :) Love my pittie, Dakota!

Becky, I am sorry to hear about your cousin. But, it isn't the breed. Some dogs have a wire loose, just like people do. I volunteer at a 100% no-kill shelter. We have 5 "VIP" dogs. One has actually been diagnosed bipolar. He is friendly one second, and the next he viciously growls. We have 2 others that will act normal and then start pacing the yard and bite without warning. These dogs are used to us because they are permanent residents, but will still bite. Certain people take them out, not...

These dogs are used to us because they are permanent residents, but will still bite. Certain people take them out, not knowing what their attitude is that day. NONE of these dogs are pit bull. No trace of pit bull at all. Pit bulls aren't vicious as everyone makes them out to be. I work with all kinds of dogs all the time and I honestly have never met a smarter and more gentle breed of dog.

In America, pit bulls were also called the 'nanny dog' in the early 20th century. They have the tolerance of any dog second only to one. They have been mistreated & vilified, the same as German Shepards, Dobermans,& Rotweilers.

In Cali they had a front page article and photo of the strength and dangers of pittys, explaining each part of the pitbulls body and how it can be used for power -- Nothing had happened, mind you, they just wanted a glorified piece to rile the folks up on a slow news day. And did they happen to mention the endless accounts of hero pitbulls who saved the lives of humans and animals alike? No. Just their powerful strength and how we should be scared of them. Okay, so what of this, then? Three...

When a dog is born they are the same as a child. They need to be taught right from wrong. If the owner trains them to be violent they will be. If the ownser trains them to be loving yet protective they will be. I have a 1 1/2yr old brindle pit who has nothing but unconditional love <3 He plays tag with the kids, hide and seek and watches over there like they are his kids. When he is riding in the car with us and someone walks up to the vehicle he will make his presence known and stand at...

When he is riding in the car with us and someone walks up to the vehicle he will make his presence known and stand at attention. He stays in the yard without leach or chain unless he is going out of sight to use the bathroom in privacy. It is up to the owner to mold them into whatever they become. I refuse to allow people to stereotype pitbulls when its the people who need to be stereotyped. Best dog I ever had is my PITBULL

My Pit Bull, Dillie, is the sweetest dog in the world!!! Of course, everyone else who has one and loves it, will say the same thing. Any breed or dog has the potential to be aggressive. It is how they are raised, cared for and loved. Please be good to your pet, no matter what that may be.

Evelyn, I agree Pit Bulls are great with children and are great dogs that have been stereotyped by pure ignorance... England though has strict BSL, where they seize all dogs that resemble a "Pit Bull". British Advocates of the breed are in a major fight to protect these dogs from this genocide...

I've given up on expecting logic out of people. The vast majority (sadly, yes I do mean majority) simply lack enough critical thought in day-to-day understanding of any topic. Too often people say something profoundly ignorant like "I saw on the 'news'... heard from a friend... read in a 'magazine'..." and use entertainment media (and its 30 sec sound bite design) as their sole source of "scientific" information. Sickening. It is too easy to have hard science prove something as simple as...

Sickening. It is too easy to have hard science prove something as simple as BSL being false YET still have entire communities ignore it cause they "feel" different or because of "this one time I saw a dog bark at me" stupidity. I have memories of being hit by a car, so all car drivers must be gunning for children, look at the statistics of children in car accidents... so lets BAN ALL CARS (and ignore the true numbers of how many children safely encounter cars, or are injured from bikes, stairs, and sidewalks)...
