In England, Pit Bulls are known as the nanny dog because they are so gentle with children; as Heather says, its the people, not the dogs.

In England pitbulls are banned. https://www.gov.uk/control-dog-public/banned-dogs We called them nanny dogs, find a few clips of Little Rascals, they had Sparky a pitbull who watched over them ..

And from a quick search, here are three examples of the proven point of how seriously, selflessly, sweet, precious pittys can be (and many more where these came from!) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUV1oTciznE , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75GEzD6wh8o , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLnhy6oHQ1M

This is absolutely true. But people tend to only see how an animal acts and then think that is how he/she acts naturally, completely neglecting the heavy influence of the training and treatment he/she got from the people.

My pittie is a Nanny dog! He absolutely loves my 2 granddaughters. When my youngest granddaughter was just learning to walk....he would let us know when she was 'sneaking' to the stairs and when she was upstairs, he would position his body between her and the stairs....NO way was going to fall down the stairs on HIS watch. :) Love my pittie, Dakota!

Becky, I am sorry to hear about your cousin. But, it isn't the breed. Some dogs have a wire loose, just like people do. I volunteer at a 100% no-kill shelter. We have 5 "VIP" dogs. One has actually been diagnosed bipolar. He is friendly one second, and the next he viciously growls. We have 2 others that will act normal and then start pacing the yard and bite without warning. These dogs are used to us because they are permanent residents, but will still bite. Certain people take them out, not...

These dogs are used to us because they are permanent residents, but will still bite. Certain people take them out, not knowing what their attitude is that day. NONE of these dogs are pit bull. No trace of pit bull at all. Pit bulls aren't vicious as everyone makes them out to be. I work with all kinds of dogs all the time and I honestly have never met a smarter and more gentle breed of dog.

We currently own 3 awesome pits. I \'ve had a variety of dogs thruout my lifetime. We have found this breed to one of the most loving and loyal. Wish they could get the recognition they deserve instead of just bad press. It is the bad owners, not the dogs who need to be stopped.

I think their fine just treat them with respect and you cant go wrong , I know a few people had them and they`ve been OK . I know someone with a American Bulldog called ' MAXIMUS ' (got treated badly as a pup!, but , now the owner treats him like a King) well I call him that because he`s GREAT , FAST & STRONG and LOYAL , TRUE FRIEND in my life and great with other dogs too . Good on you " M A X I M U S " . . . . . . . . . .

They are illegal in the city I live in & I would like some info on how to go about changing the law.

I own four of these amazing animals and they love my daughter and play with her and know the difference between gentle and too rough. There should be stricter punishment for abusing animals and this breed especially. "Punish the deed not the breed" all the way

I am a dog owner not an expert by any means but I believe in training and teaching the next generation properly kindness to all breeds. I do not feel dogs should suffer for mistakes people make. We don't all read body signals and put them in safe situations. Educating the public is always the best policy. Learning will change opinions and a silly law will be ineffective in keeping dogs and humans safe.

Pit Bulls used to be family/nanny dogs mid-century in the USA also! Spanky and Our Gang had a Pit Bull on the show.
