In England, Pit Bulls are known as the nanny dog because they are so gentle with children; as Heather says, its the people, not the dogs.

In England pitbulls are banned. https://www.gov.uk/control-dog-public/banned-dogs We called them nanny dogs, find a few clips of Little Rascals, they had Sparky a pitbull who watched over them ..

And from a quick search, here are three examples of the proven point of how seriously, selflessly, sweet, precious pittys can be (and many more where these came from!) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUV1oTciznE , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75GEzD6wh8o , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLnhy6oHQ1M

This is absolutely true. But people tend to only see how an animal acts and then think that is how he/she acts naturally, completely neglecting the heavy influence of the training and treatment he/she got from the people.

My pittie is a Nanny dog! He absolutely loves my 2 granddaughters. When my youngest granddaughter was just learning to walk....he would let us know when she was 'sneaking' to the stairs and when she was upstairs, he would position his body between her and the stairs....NO way was going to fall down the stairs on HIS watch. :) Love my pittie, Dakota!

Becky, I am sorry to hear about your cousin. But, it isn't the breed. Some dogs have a wire loose, just like people do. I volunteer at a 100% no-kill shelter. We have 5 "VIP" dogs. One has actually been diagnosed bipolar. He is friendly one second, and the next he viciously growls. We have 2 others that will act normal and then start pacing the yard and bite without warning. These dogs are used to us because they are permanent residents, but will still bite. Certain people take them out, not...

These dogs are used to us because they are permanent residents, but will still bite. Certain people take them out, not knowing what their attitude is that day. NONE of these dogs are pit bull. No trace of pit bull at all. Pit bulls aren't vicious as everyone makes them out to be. I work with all kinds of dogs all the time and I honestly have never met a smarter and more gentle breed of dog.

Outlawing a breed of dog is as dumb as would be outlawing cars for drunk drivers! Its a PEOPLE problem. Thugs (like Michael Vick) who do this to animals are very sick in the head and should stay locked up in a cage forever. We have more to fear from those type PEOPLE , BAN THEM instead ! If there is Karma then there will be a day soon when two 400lbs linebackers ....

It's always the people not the dog. Any breed can be dangerous. Just as any breed can be loving and well trained. If you are a responsible owner you will have a great dog. No matter what the breed.

It is ridiculous to ban these dogs....instead, ban the idiots/breed abusers from owning these beautiful dogs. These dogs have big hearts. Any breed of dog can be made mean by its owner and mean enough to kill. Do guns really kill people or the person holding the gun and using it as a weapon This breed of dog is USED by the bad guys - not the breed is bad. So let's stop this kind of discrimination against a beautiful animal. I sell houses and a pit lived next door ..the dog was tied up...

So let's stop this kind of discrimination against a beautiful animal. I sell houses and a pit lived next door ..the dog was tied up 24-7 with no attention or love - I noticed he was out of water one day when I was showing. After the buyers left, I talked to the dog and gradually approached him and his friendliness. He was so tickled to have me give him some attention and was very loving; even in his neglected conditions he was appreciative of my presence. I approached the home owner about my getting him some water from her hose for him. Later I had someone contact her regarding her lack of care for him.

Oh I love all but these are a wonderful breed. It's always the people. Sadly there is huge dogfighting in SA with these dogs. Heartreaking!!!!
