In England, Pit Bulls are known as the nanny dog because they are so gentle with children; as Heather says, its the people, not the dogs.

In England pitbulls are banned. https://www.gov.uk/control-dog-public/banned-dogs We called them nanny dogs, find a few clips of Little Rascals, they had Sparky a pitbull who watched over them ..

And from a quick search, here are three examples of the proven point of how seriously, selflessly, sweet, precious pittys can be (and many more where these came from!) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUV1oTciznE , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75GEzD6wh8o , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLnhy6oHQ1M

This is absolutely true. But people tend to only see how an animal acts and then think that is how he/she acts naturally, completely neglecting the heavy influence of the training and treatment he/she got from the people.

My pittie is a Nanny dog! He absolutely loves my 2 granddaughters. When my youngest granddaughter was just learning to walk....he would let us know when she was 'sneaking' to the stairs and when she was upstairs, he would position his body between her and the stairs....NO way was going to fall down the stairs on HIS watch. :) Love my pittie, Dakota!

Becky, I am sorry to hear about your cousin. But, it isn't the breed. Some dogs have a wire loose, just like people do. I volunteer at a 100% no-kill shelter. We have 5 "VIP" dogs. One has actually been diagnosed bipolar. He is friendly one second, and the next he viciously growls. We have 2 others that will act normal and then start pacing the yard and bite without warning. These dogs are used to us because they are permanent residents, but will still bite. Certain people take them out, not...

These dogs are used to us because they are permanent residents, but will still bite. Certain people take them out, not knowing what their attitude is that day. NONE of these dogs are pit bull. No trace of pit bull at all. Pit bulls aren't vicious as everyone makes them out to be. I work with all kinds of dogs all the time and I honestly have never met a smarter and more gentle breed of dog.

Outlawing a breed of dog is as dumb as would be outlawing cars for drunk drivers! Its a PEOPLE problem. Thugs (like Michael Vick) who do this to animals are very sick in the head and should stay locked up in a cage forever. We have more to fear from those type PEOPLE , BAN THEM instead ! If there is Karma then there will be a day soon when two 400lbs linebackers ....

Bsl DOESNT WORK!!! People need to look at Edmonton & Calgary to see how things are done!!! Dogs learn what we people teach them, punish the deed not breed!!!!

I have a pitbull and he is the sweetest dog around us and small children. The problem is not the pits it's the owners who get them for fighting and who don't know how to train and handle properly that ruin it for the rest of us

its never the poor loving dog... its the way is treated by the owner.... save the dog and jail the owner

These dogs get a bad bad rap!!Ilove all my 6 pitts!!

I agree, pit bulls got a bad name. I feel it is the way you raise your dog. If you treat them with kindness & let them know you are the boss they will be loving dogs. If you train them to fight then that is what they will do. I have known many people who have pit bulls and they are adorable, loving animals

And here's the kicker... even fighting pitbulls have been proven to be able to be rehabilitated and the most loving of pets. They truly are magnificent... and don't get me started on how many hero pittys have saved people and animals... but just try to get a front page news article on those incredible incidents!

Me and My Wife bought our 10 year old son a Staffordshire Pitbull for his 8th birthday and they play like 2 young brothers. He is the most patient dog I've owned. My Floyd is a very important part of our family, in the time since we bought him at 8 weeks old he has one of the best things I have spent my money on, We have just came back from Gran Canaria and not day went by we did not miss him or talk or mention in. It's so great to be home to be back with our Floyd. I totally agree with most...

People need to understand the breed not the deranged people that abuse them and give them a bad name !!!
