In England, Pit Bulls are known as the nanny dog because they are so gentle with children; as Heather says, its the people, not the dogs.

In England pitbulls are banned. https://www.gov.uk/control-dog-public/banned-dogs We called them nanny dogs, find a few clips of Little Rascals, they had Sparky a pitbull who watched over them ..

And from a quick search, here are three examples of the proven point of how seriously, selflessly, sweet, precious pittys can be (and many more where these came from!) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUV1oTciznE , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75GEzD6wh8o , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLnhy6oHQ1M

This is absolutely true. But people tend to only see how an animal acts and then think that is how he/she acts naturally, completely neglecting the heavy influence of the training and treatment he/she got from the people.

My pittie is a Nanny dog! He absolutely loves my 2 granddaughters. When my youngest granddaughter was just learning to walk....he would let us know when she was 'sneaking' to the stairs and when she was upstairs, he would position his body between her and the stairs....NO way was going to fall down the stairs on HIS watch. :) Love my pittie, Dakota!

Becky, I am sorry to hear about your cousin. But, it isn't the breed. Some dogs have a wire loose, just like people do. I volunteer at a 100% no-kill shelter. We have 5 "VIP" dogs. One has actually been diagnosed bipolar. He is friendly one second, and the next he viciously growls. We have 2 others that will act normal and then start pacing the yard and bite without warning. These dogs are used to us because they are permanent residents, but will still bite. Certain people take them out, not...

These dogs are used to us because they are permanent residents, but will still bite. Certain people take them out, not knowing what their attitude is that day. NONE of these dogs are pit bull. No trace of pit bull at all. Pit bulls aren't vicious as everyone makes them out to be. I work with all kinds of dogs all the time and I honestly have never met a smarter and more gentle breed of dog.

THESE DOGS SHOULD NOT BE FOUGHT, BUT THEY NEED A LOT OF ENERGY RELEASE, EXORCISE, ATTENTION/LOVE, A JOB PERHAPS?...AND ONLY BREED FOR ABILITY, NOT LOOKS!!!! BUT LET'S NEVER FORGET THEIR HISTORY, BECAUSE THEY AREN'T REALLY THE SAME BREED ANYMORE. SOME SAY, THAT SOON THEY WILL NOT EVEN EXIST ANYMORE, JUST STAFFIE-Like CREATURES...

I too use to judge the pitt for things I'd heard... I changed my mind very quickly when I lived in Vegas. . I was dating someone who owned a Pitt needless to say that Pitt saved my life as my then boyfriend was beating mein my head his own dog attacked him to save me..Er Doctor said if not for that Pitt I probably would have not made it.. I brought Cesar back to Ga with me he always watched over me & my kids. .. They are what people make them thank God that Pitt was there that day!!!!!

It's people that need licensing - not dogs! I don't believe there are dangerous 'breeds of dogs' there are some really dangerous people - that's who we need protecting from and then when a dog does something bad we put it down - instead of the owner that trained it!

It's always the people not the dog. Any breed can be dangerous. Just as any breed can be loving and well trained. If you are a responsible owner you will have a great dog. No matter what the breed.
