I knew the answer from watching something on TV about plastic bags in the ocean water's n landfills.
I'm 53 and remember a world without plastic bags. They probably save some trees, but they need to cost consumers to encourage reusable bags- something the plastic bag lobby does not want!
I use them for kitty litter and my bathroom linner!!
Originally they were giving paper bags at the grocery store and than they switched to plastic bags. Now they sell reusable bags.
Egypt is covered in plastic..everywhere you look.
T. Soroyan A helpful suggestion to all dog owners: instead of using plastic bags for your dogs' poop; use a sheet or two of paper towel. I wrap the poop in it and make it my business to collect small brown bags to put it in. I then toss it in the nearest trash bin. If you can't find a small brown bag, use newspaper. It works just as well and helps us get off our addiction to plastic bags.
There has now been a huge proliferation of reusable bags, some of which are not easily recyclable when they come to the end of their natural life, which is becoming an additional problem!! Brown paper bags like the old days would be better---they are reusable for a period of time, and also easily recyclable.
