Although I would like that the sword returns to Malta, one has to realise that it belonged to the Order and not to the Maltese people and that if Napoleon had not taken it as "spoils of war' the Order would have kept possession of it and taken it with them wherever they transferred to. So I do not see a strong case for the French relinquishing it.
