I see where some people have debated the legality of this, but I think that you have to appreciate that the term “tangible benefit” should prevent this good idea from bumping into the 1st Amendment too much. There is a fine line between free speech and fraud, and clearly the intent here is to prevent that line from being crossed. I suppose that some folks will always just be happy to live in their fictions (and this allows that to a point), but this is a win for veterans if it prevents some...

I have lost track of the lying clowns I've run into who claim to have been in Special Forces, Black Ops, were a sniper or did something that they "can't talk about". I've even seen these bozos wearing Special Forces ball caps and whipping out Special Forces coins. One time while out having a beer with a friend who had to kill and was wounded in combat I had to keep him from pummeling a loud-mouthed wannabe who bragged about how many "gooks" he "wasted" into a bloody pulp. No-one, no-one,...

No-one, no-one, boasts about killing because it's an ugly reality of war that a combat veteran wants to bury and try to forget.

The best way to punish these wannabes is to post their names, cities and states along with their booking photos as well as the false claim they made along with a year in prison and a hefty fine. Holding these clowns up for public humiliation can bite them on the ass when applying for a job among other things. Outing them can turn them into social lepers.

I had 3 at a yard sale we had Saturday. The ball cap brigade. I ask ones wife when they had been in. She said he never had served.

unfortunately the supreme court has decided it is free speech. And as such is covered by the first amendment to the bill of rights.Yes just like burning the national flag it royally pisses me off, but where do we draw the line on free expression or speech? If it is unpopular or just angers the most of us.

Wow, it is surprising to me what are bad and crimes are just dismissed and which ones aren't. I also don't understand. How many can vote when there is an exact number of Congress. I think they should all vote

wwowould also think that burning the flag is an act of terrorism due to its meaning for the united states and is an actual hate crime. Those people should get a fatter sentence and fine! Americans - that is what we are and we live here. So why should it be just free speech when they are making a statement of hatred for fellow Americans. I also believe if they came here from another country then they should be deported

I think a year is appropriate. However I would make them serve it in an Army Stockade or a Navy Brig.

There has to be another punishment. Our prisons are overpopulated as it is. I am not sure in this one.

I say save the "cushy" jail cells. MAKE them try to serve in whichever branch they claimed to be a part of... they would soon see that their choice to lie was not such a good one! God bless all our REAL HEROES!

I would think that anyone that stoops to that level of misrepresenting himself should get at least a life sentence, an possibly the death sentence.

personally, i think that the people who are supposed to represent us in local, state and the federal government, should be made to prove both theirs and their families military records, whether implied or expressed. if they cannot prove it, they should be forced to remove it from both private and public view.in so doing this, it will discourage like minded unsavory members of the general public from attempting to do the same thing..stealing valor.public representatives who "steal valor" should be barred from EVER serving in public office
