Nairobi, Kenya – Sunday 24 February 2013 … Transparency International, Kenya (TI-Kenya) and Kenya Believe It (KBI) made history as the “I RUN FOR INTEGRITY – I AM THE CHANGE” peace campaign held a rally for over 6,000 residents of the coastal community at the Public beach in North Coast, Mobassa.

METHOD: A MOVEMENT OF INTEGRITY - ensuring the whistle blowers are protected

The I RUN FOR INTEGRITY campaign has held two of The Largest known peace rallies in two towns so far; Nakuru and Mombasa where an astounding total of 12,000+ people came to hear and partake in the message of peace in advance of the upcoming elections.  In the face of a multitude of partisan rallies the attendance at these non-partisan rallies by the youth has been an open expression by this voting body that they want to heard about change.

The many happy faces of the crowds were delighted by the presentation of the array of performances from the official 6 artists appointed by TI-Kenya to champion the message of integrity and peaceful elections: Jua Cali, Sanaipei, Rabbit, Avril, Ala-C and Marya.  The ultimate ending to the breath-taking performances was the collaborative performance of The RFI Anthem which was produced by the 6 artists, their labels and the campaign team.  When The RFI Anthem was performed on stage in a manner not to dissimilar from “We are the world” by Michael Jackson the crowds went ecstatic and immediately took to the medley and chorus; singing along as though the song had come from within.  The Anthem is designed to continue the message and carry it forward long after the campaign in order to impress upon our Kenyan youth the importance of leadership and integrity for peace while ultimately enforcing the fact that leadership for Kenya starts with them, the youth.

In both rallies so far there has been un-paralleled success from attendance to take home message of peace through integrity.  The messages have been heard and the youth galvanised with the thought that they are the cause and effect for change in the country and that they have the choice to vote and to do so with integrity.  A youth member as young as 4years of age went up on the stage and spoke (video clips available through the official TI-Kenya facebook page) presenting a shairi that moved a crowd of 6,000 kenyan adults close to tears.

The social media messaging around the rallies has started from the official TI-Kenya facebook page www.facebook.com/transparencykenya and the twitter handle @irun4integrity.  The campaign has used these platforms to dare its followers to challenge the messages they are hearing so that they may better analyse the political messaging around them.  Surprisingly the organisers behind this campaign are willing to share their audience with any and all positive, progressive and empowered message of peace.

TI-Kenya Executive Director Mr. Samuel Kimeu said the stakes are very high in these elections. "We are in a new era of the first General Elections under the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 and that has made the dynamics different from previous elections.” He continues to say “Elections are a defining characteristic of democratic regimes” “Through elections, politicians are held accountable by the people they serve.  It is vitally important that every individual voter understands that electing leaders with integrity is essential for realising a country’s potential.  Education and awareness are the essential tools to empower citizens to make informed choices.”

The campaign aims at sensitising the population and especially Kenya’s youth, on the importance of electing leaders based on their personal integrity, competence and suitability. The campaign calls for elections that are free, fair, transparent and peaceful. The youth make over 60% of the population of Kenya and have the potential to completely change the course our history if they use their vote and numbers for this purpose.  So far the campaign has been joined in voice with a number of other peace inititiaves who share a similar message of empowerment and peace – SwingVote2013, Generation Amka and I AM KENYAN links to which are all available on the main TI-Kenya facebook page.

The official sponsor of the campaign is Transparency International Kenya (TI-Kenya). TI-Kenya is part of the Transparency International group that is a non-partisan coalition of individuals with a shared vision of a corruption free world. The campaign was conceived by Kenya Believe It movement, which encourages all Kenyans to work together for positive change and to transcend tribal, ethnic and gender divisions.

The I RUN FOR INTEGRITY initiative is the first of its kind in Kenya. It has identified Kenya’s youth as a voting group pivotal to the country’s future.  The campaign calls ALL peace, empowerment and integrity messages to contact them so they may get the support they need to be heard through the I RUN 4 INTEGRITY audiences.

“Youth can be drivers of historic social change” said Priya Chana, Director of Kenya Believe It.  "For instance, in the 1960s in Europe and the USA, youth movements and the rock artists stood up and shook the system.  Non-discrimination, and gender and race equality, went from being causes for protesters to being fundamental mainstream social attitudes.  Kenyan youth and musical artists can be equally ground-breaking.”

TI-Kenya appeals to all in and connected to Kenya to support this campaign by logging on to the official TI-Kenya Facebook site: http://www.facebook.com/TransparencyKenya, where they can express their thoughts and opinions freely in a safe, respectful manner. Trending on twitter  @irun4integrity.
