This morning, the House Agricultural Committee met and discussed H. 3492, a bill that would negatively impact SC shelters with devastating consequences for pets and pet owners. The Committee voted to adjourn debate on the bill, which basically means that it has been tabled until next year. While the ideal outcome would have been for members to vote against the legislation, we are relieved that the bill did not pass out of Committee as we had feared it might. Over the summer, stakeholder groups will meet and discuss a possible compromise. While a consensus may be reached for some of the bill's provisions, there are several elements of the legislation that are so problematic that a compromise may not be achieveable. We'll keep you up-to-date as the communications move forward over the course of the year, and when the legislation is picked up in January. Thank you to all who called or wrote letters in opposition to this bill. It has been a tough and somewhat scary couple of months for those working in the rescue and sheltering communities, and it's been so encouraging to see the outpouring of support from SC's advocates!
