El Salvador in favor of including Hammerhead sharks in Appendix II of CITES

Costa Rica and Honduras have presented this proposal and it has currently support from Colombia, Denmark, Ecuador and Mexico. However, it needs 2/3 of the parties to vote in favor. We have great signals that El Salvador could also give its support. Please help us to encourage our government to make a positive final decision soon. Join our cause and share it.

The inclusion of hammerhead sharks in Appendix II of CITES would impose stricter controls on the international trade of products from this species, where a huge demand exists for its fins to supply the shark fin soup industry. This demand is responsible for the drastic reduction of populations of hammerhead sharks, which has resulted in its classification as an Endangered Species on the IUCN Red List. In 2010 the IUCN reported that the species met the criteria for App II listing, and in 2012 a Resolution adopted by the World Conservation Congress in Jeju Korea "REQUESTS all States to support the inclusion of the scalloped
hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini), the smooth Hammerhead Shark (Sphyrna zygaena) and the great hammerhead shark (Sphyrna mokarran) in Appendix II of CITES .
