Tzu Chi New York “Bike for Earth, Bike for Love, Bike for Health”
In order to spread the great love spirit of Tzu Chi, and to promote the health of individuals and Mother Earth, Tzu Chi Foundation and Tzu Chi International Medical Association will again organize a bike team to participate in 2013 TD 5 Boro Bike Tour on Sunday, May 5.
TD 5 Boro Bike Tour is the largest cycling event in the US with 32,000 cyclists. Participants will ride 40 miles of traffic-free, level roads with rest areas. The tour is hosted by Bike New York, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and encourage bicycling and bicycle safety. The bike route starts just north of Battery Park, up Manhattan, through Central Park, around a brief loop in the Bronx and down to the Queensboro Bridge, over the Pulaski Bridge through Brooklyn. The route ends in Staten Island. Cyclists can participate in a festival at the finish line and then take ferry back to Manhattan for free.
This year, Tzu Chi Foundation is one of 43 charity partners of the event. Tzu Chi will raise fund through this event for Hurricane Sandy victims and Tzu Chi’s charity mission. Tzu Chi Foundation mobilized over 4,000 volunteers, distributed cash cards to almost sixteen thousand households affected by Hurricane Sandy, as well as over sixteen thousand eco-blankets/scarfs, eight thousand hot meals, and 2,500 hygiene kits; all while touching numerous hearts of disaster victims, first responders, and volunteers alike. Mid- and Long-term Sandy relief missions are in the works. Tzu Chi’s charity mission fund will be used towards charity case management, happy campus program, homeless care, and international relief, etc.
All Tzu Chi volunteers/families/members/friends are welcome to participate. We participate in this event to promote health, to raise awareness of environmental protection, to introduce Tzu Chi’s spirit of great love, and to network. By participating in cycling and protect the environment, we hope to reduce the impact of future natural disasters.
