About

The current Spanish government wants to introduce a new law by which
the Catalan language would become simply an optional subject in the
educational system, as opposed to the compulsory subject it currently
is. Catalan and Castilian Spanish are both official languages in
Catalonia. However, the scenario under this new law would set us back to
the early stages of democracy that followed Franco’s dictatorship of 40
years during which the usage of the Catalan language in public was
banned. Furthermore, this new law would overrule the Catalan law in
education. This is the fiercest attack yet to the Catalan language in
the post-Franco times, and by default to the Catalan people. This law
would not apply just to Catalan, but also to the Basque and Galician
languages.
