TSTA has launched a petition drive, urging Governor Perry to call a special session of the Legislature to appropriate $2.5 billion of the Rainy Day Fund and head off deep budget cuts to the public schools for the 2012-2013 school year. TSTA President Rita Haecker announced the initiative at a news conference at the Capitol, where she was joined by State Representative Donna Howard of Austin, who endorsed our campaign.

Parents don’t want to see more teacher layoffs and more overcrowded classrooms. They want to protect their children’s learning environment.

We know there are adequate revenues in the Rainy Day Fund to stop devastating cuts to our public schools and have enough money left over to meet other emergency state needs without a tax increase. The Texas economy is improving, and we cannot afford to leave our school children behind.
