Back to Frederick P Drew Memorial Fund

News Update

Nearly two weeks after 18-year-old Frederick P. Drew was laid to rest, officials have charged the 16-year-old accused in his death as an adult.

Deandre Jordan Phillips of Crystal River was moved from a juvenile facility to the Citrus County jail on Friday and booked on a second-degree murder charge.

Phillips had been housed at Juvenile Justice Center in Ocala since Oct. 2, when he was arrested after allegedly gunning down Drew at a remote teen hangout in Citrus Springs.

Assistant State Attorney Pete Magrino said based on the nature of the crime and other factors, his office has determined that Phillips fits the statutory requirements to be tried as an adult.

“Given his age, over 15, the use of a deadly weapon and it being a crime of violence, satisfies most of the requirements,” Magrino said.
