When I was 12 years old I found out I was HIV-positive. I won a battle with a form of cancer that attacks the kidneys when I was 2 years old, and had gone in for my 10-year check up. During my cancer treatment years earlier I was transfused during two operations and the doctors told me it was then that I was unknowingly infected with the HIV virus.
But thankfully, that wasn’t the end of my story. I survived because of the HIV medication I started taking called AZT. That medicine was made available to children because of Elizabeth Glaser. Elizabeth demanded that medications, doctors, research, and treatment be available for children and she did not back down until her demands became reality. And she refused to stop fighting until children’s voices were heard. I am now a 31 years old, married, happy, healthy… and alive. And that’s because I had access to care and treatment programs that Elizabeth fought for, but unfortunately not all children are as lucky as I was.
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation just entered in America's Giving Challenge, which gives us a chance to win $50,000! To win, between now and November 7th we have to get the most $10USD donations to our cause (every person can donate once per day and have it count as a unique donation). We can also win daily awards of $1,000 and $500 if we can get the most people to donate in any 24-hour period. The great thing about this Challenge is that it doesn't matter how much you give, but instead how much you do to encourage friends and family to get involved in our cause. We all need to come together and start promoting the cause if we want to win.
Today alone, 1,000 children around the world will be infected with HIV. Same thing tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that. If we don’t help these children, 50% of them will die before their second birthday. This is your opportunity to help these children the same way the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation helped me. By supporting the Foundation’s work, YOU will help them increase their reach to HIV-positive pregnant women around the world. YOU will help a sick child grow up to lead a healthy life and contribute to his or her community. And YOU will help the Foundation create the first generation free of HIV.
You probably have 300 friends on Facebook. Ask them to join our cause and donate. If 10% of those friends join and donate the minimum of $10, that’s $300 (thanks to you, by the way… see a pattern?). Now multiply that by the more than 7,100 people who have already joined our cause. That’s more than $2 million dollars. But beyond the critical funds this challenge would raise for our mission, this is also about our community. Uniting our supporters in a way that empowers them to realize their abilities to truly make a difference. So, ask your friends to join our cause and encourage them to ask their friends. Ask them to tweet about it, and blog about it, and post on other people’s Facebook pages about it. Your donation, your support, and your commitment to this mission will save a life.
As you reach out to your friends be sure to tell them why this cause matters to you. The possibilities are endless so let's talk about what we can do to win not only America’s Giving Challenge, but also the fight to eradicate pediatric AIDS. Post on the Foundation’s Cause Wall or by replying to this bulletin. Every voice matters.
Thanks for your support,
Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation
