About

Our mission is to improve the quality of life for kids and teens battling cancer in a fun and fashionable way!

My name is Nellie and I wanted to share how I am making a difference in my community and why I need help. Five years ago I was sixteen years old and set out on a mission to help kids and teens battling cancer. I wanted to create a unique way to help these kids and teens that would help raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer.

I have always enjoyed anything fashion related ever since I was a little girl. Before my grandmother, Goldie Sheridan, passed away from cancer I would always put on "mini fashion shows" for her and it was something special that we shared. When I was sophomore in high school I began to do research about cancer and found out that childhood cancer was the least funded and the number one leading cause of death of children. That was a defining moment when I knew I had to do something to create more funds for these kids. I then took the inspiration from my relationship with my grandmother and began molding it into a community fashion show to raise funds for local kids and teens with cancer. I wanted the models to be all kids and teens that are touched by cancer in some-way-shape-or-form.

In 2006, Nellie’s Catwalk for Kids was created and started off as a yearly fashion show for the entire Columbus community to get involved in! The first fashion show brought in about $3,000, but it was a start to something greater than just funds raised. It was the start to more awareness for pediatric cancer, a teen making a difference, new friendships, and the community getting involved. NC4K has expanded from a once a year event to several fundraising events throughout the year, high school and college fundraising clubs, and also a kids club for local kids going through treatment and also survivors. Over the past four years the community has helped raise over $50,000 for NC4K that has gone to Nationwide Children’s Hospital Oncology Center, Nellie’s Kids Club, and keeping the organization growing. Nellie’s Catwalk for Kids goal is to raise awareness of childhood cancer in a fun and fashionable way all across the United States, this is where I need help!

I will be graduating college in the spring of 2013 and that is when I plan on taking NC4K nationwide, but I can't do it by myself. The summer of 2013 the NC4K team will be traveling in an RV across the United States stopping in major cities to meet local pediatric cancer families, kick off other NC4K fashion shows, and to make childhood cancer awareness as well known as breast cancer. From now until 2013 I need to find other leaders in other major cities to jump on board of our team to start planning a 2013 fashion show, I need to find more families in other out of state cities that we can help serve, and people to stand behind us in our mission.

More and more families are being told their son or daughter has cancer and very little funding to help them get through this journey. Kids and teens should be in school, playing outside, swimming, hang out with friends, and just being carefree. They shouldn't have to worry about going to the hospital to get chemo treatments and take medicine that makes them feel sick. And parents shouldn't have to worry about how they are going to pay for medical bills, or put food on the table, or the worst free of all losing their child to cancer.
