Bertschi School continues to be a leader in educating children to become thoughtful stewards of their local and global communities.

Imagine a building that is completely self-sustaining. What does it look like? How would it work? Impossible? Not for Bertschi School. Using power from the sun collected by solar panels, there’s heat and electricity. Rainwater is collected in cisterns, cleaned by plants growing on a living wall, and used daily by students through classroom faucets.

This will be a reality at Bertschi School in just a few months. The new Living Building Science Wing will bring learning to life! In a space designed with local, non-toxic materials, students will come face to face with rainwater harvesting, solar energy, and passive ventilation.

Learning will extend even beyond the building. An Ethnobotanical garden will grow plants originally used by Native Americans. Students will harvest fruits and vegetables, use berries to make dye and try their hand at weaving with grass and ferns from the garden.

We need your help to make this happen! You can be part of teaching children how to take care of our planet and preserve its resources. Make a donation today and make a difference tomorrow. Thank you for supporting our Living Building and our students!

1. This project is schedule to be the first Living Building in Washington State.

2. The building will have no carbon footprint, with net-zero energy and net-zero water.

3. This project is an amazing learning opportunity for students as well as the larger Seattle community.

4. Kids learn better in green buildings! Research shows an estimated 15% reduction in absenteeism and a 5% increase in test scores.
