This is an effort to make people aware of the advantages and community benefits of being a part of the BIG 12 Conference. It increases conference fan base while push for an expansion of the BIG 12.
The conference was officially formed on February 25, 1994, when the members of the former Big Eight Conference joined with four Texas schools that had been members of the Southwest Conference, which had just disbanded after realignment. The Big 12 Conference considers itself a new conference, as opposed to an evolution of the Big Eight Conference, and does not claim the Big Eight Conference's history as its own. It announced it would keep its name instead of switching names with the Big Ten conference (now a 12 team league) after 2010 realignment depleted the conference to 10 teams. Athletic competition in the conference commenced on August 31, 1996.
