The danger of leaving a Meerkat group...

Migrant male Meerkats leave the safety of their groups in search of breeding opportunities. It is very risky to be away from the safety of the group.

Commonly migrant males will return to their groups and frequently form coalitions with other males, which may allow them to displace a resident breeding male and also offers better safety in numbers.

A great deal of condition will be lost during migration, and often migratory males are infested with parasites due to the lack of reciprocal grooming from a group. There are also fewer opportunities to groom when having to be more vigilant on their own, or in small gatherings of migrant males.
