The Town Council and the Royal British Legion of Wootton Bassett have asked that any recognition of their honouring of fallen troops by their local people be postponed until the Armed Forces of the U.K. are no longer engaged in any large scale active military conflicts.
The activities of this and other Facebook Causes has been welcomed, but there is a very grave caution being expressed by the local community that a formal recognition of Wootton Bassett (during times of continuing conflict) with an O.B.E. or Royal Town status, might result in a terrorist atrocity being directed at their locality as a reprisal.
I am sure that all supporters of this Facebook Cause would be traumatised and emotionally scarred if the formal recognition of the people of Wooton Bassett it seeks, led to them being physically harmed as a direct result.
This Facebook Cause will continue, but on the ABSOLUTE UNDERSTANDING that it presses for recognition of Wootton Bassett ONLY at a future date when our Armed Forces are no longer engaged in any active conflict where terrorist acts are a substantial element.
